Vehicle Description
The origins of the Porsche 930 can be traced back to the late 1960s
when Porsche began to experiment with turbocharging for their race
cars. By 1972 they had developed a turbocharged version of the 911
for homologation purposes and this became the basis of the Porsche
930, which was generally known to the public as the 911 Turbo. The
engine for this car was developed by Ernst Fuhrmann who adapted the
turbocharging technology originally used in the 917 race cars to
produce a 3 litre, 6 cylinder unit that developed almost 260
b.h.p. Harnessing this power was a stronger gearbox, redesigned
suspension system, larger brakes and wider rear wheels. Coupled
with a new "whale tail" rear spoiler, which helped cool the engine
and provide additional downforce, the new 930 was a potent yet
highly tractable sports car.
As sometimes happens with limited production run cars, particularly
those conceived from racing origins, the response from the public
was far stronger than expected and the road going version quickly
achieved cult status. In response to the strong demand, Porsche
expanded the production run and continued to develop the model,
with the first significant change occurring in 1978 with an
increase in engine capacity from 3 to 3.3 litres and the addition
of an air-to-air intercooler, which helped reduce the temperature
of the pressurised air charge and raised the power output to 300
b.h.p. Other changes included upgraded brakes, based on the 917
racing design, and a raised rear spoiler, to accommodate the new
intercooler.
Recently arrived, the example offered is a 1978-model and comes in
the very rare original colour combination of Olive Green with Cork
leather interior and Olive Tartan seat inserts. Only two examples
were produced in this fabulous colour and this car is the only
survivor, the other having been written off in an accident and
scrapped. Built on 20th June 1978 to the lightest and most
desirable German specification of single wing mirror no A/C and no
sunroof, it was originally delivered to a Mr Heinrich JanBeu of
Rheurdt in North West Germany. The second owner, a Dr Paulusma,
took possession in 1994 and the car subsequently moved to Holland
where it stayed with only one further change in ownership until
2016 when it moved to Oxfordshire. The car was regularly serviced
from new at approved Porsche garages as evidenced in the original
service records book, which accompanies the car. It is presented
today in immaculate condition having had one professional
bare-metal repaint (with photographic record) for show purposes
whilst retaining its original, and as factory delivered, paint
finish to both the engine bay and under bonnet areas. This fully
detailed matching numbers car also retains its complete original
interior, its original body panels and comes with it's full
compliment of original tool kit, jack, spare tyre air pump and
gloves etc. Extensive history file detailing the ownership,
maintenance and restoration of this wonderful and unique car.
