The well-respected Super Duty 455 made its final appearance, and the industry has seen little like it since. Often referred to as the last from the famed musclecar era, the car’s fresh appearance was the big marketing news for Pontiac in 1974. Introduced in a period when other manufacturers were turning away from performance, the SD455 developed an aura that became entrenched for those who read about it in period automobile magazines, plus all who have experienced its fierce acceleration. In 1974, 943 Super Duty powered cars were built. Only 731 were fitted with an automatic, as displayed here, and 212 were fitted with standard transmissions.
Since this car was new, it has only received cosmetic attention and a repaint in the 1990s. The owner reports that this Super Duty still retains its complete original drivetrain. Moving this Trans Am down the road is a stout 455-cid V-8 engine that is thoughtfully paired with rare automatic transmission and a Posi-traction rear differential. The exterior of this Pontiac is presented stunningly in white with factory Honeycomb wheels and the well-known graphics adorning the hood of the car. The interior of the car is tailored with well-presented white upholstery, front bucket seats, air conditioning, power windows, tilt steering, indash radio, center console and a three-spoke Pontiac steering wheel. This car has been described as fully loaded, which includes previously mentioned amenities, plus power steering and power brakes.
This 1974 Super Duty Pontiac Trans Am was originally delivered to Quebec, Canada. For this reason, the original owner’s manuals that accompany the car are written in French. Also accompanying the Super Duty are the original window stickers and documentation from GM of Canada showing what the car was equipped with when delivered new. This car is a rarely seen muscle car that has been well-preserved and cared for by the caretakers that have had the pleasure of owning it.
