1967 Ford Mustang Custom Fastback – Project “Night Fury”
Let me start here – this is not Eleanor; it is project “Night Fury”. It only shares the PPG paint codes and nothing more; it was built to stand alone from the rest. A fresh, ground-up, rotisserie restoration began in 2008 and has been an ongoing build to date with less than 20 test-and-tune miles. “Night Fury” has been recognized as a Good Guy’s 2015 award winner at the Lone Star Nationals and 1st place winner at the 2014 San Antonio regional Mustang show (albeit mildly unfinished at that time). The car was acquired in December 2007 and an intensive five-year build commenced. The foundation began with a relatively rust-free original Texas fastback with a DSO 62 - Dallas, TX.
Many subtle body modifications were performed during the two year “pre-assembly” stage where the car was fully designed fitted, fabricated, and welded. Subsequently, the bare unibody was soda blasted to clean metal, primed, and 10 months of body work were performed to ensure laser-straight body lines. DuPont Chromabase Premier Pepper Grey #44490 with a Black Metallic #44435 “Super Snake”-style stripe cover the length of the car with eight coats of clear to add a mirror finish. A complete smoked glass kit was installed with powder coated trim to accentuate the exterior colors. A wide variety of exterior highlights include the one-off hand-built fiberglass hood, shaved door handles, raised and smoothed steel cowl with recessed wipers, integrated steel quarter panel scoops, recessed reversed sail panel vent deletes, 3” recessed and bead-rolled firewall, smooth inner fender wells, removable core support, billet hood hinges with stainless struts, Scott Drake steel CS taillight panel with integrated flush mount popup fuel cap and CNC waterjet machined flush taillight lenses and trim with countersunk fasteners, narrowed and fitted steel bumpers, consistent 3/16” body gaps, welded quarter panel seams, and the list goes on and on….the more you look, the more you see.
Drivetrain: Spec for a 2007 Saleen Extreme supercharged S281. The engine is a new takeout 4.6L 3V modular engine with forced induction by a 2.3L twin rotor, liquid-intercooled belt-driven Saleen blower. Precisely handling the power output is a Tremec T-3650 5-speed manual transmission with a Fidanza aluminum flywheel and stage 2 clutch. Conveying the power to the legendary Ford 9” differential is a custom built 3.5” aluminum driveshaft with integral compression joint. The rear end contains a nodular “N” case with Richmond 3.73 gears, Ford Trac-loc, and Strange Engineering 31 spline big bearing axle shafts.
Braking System: Consists of a late model SN95 Cobra Bendix Hydroboost and master cylinder actuating front Wilwood six piston calipers with two-piece rotors and rear Wilwood four piston calipers with integral parking brake.
Suspension: Includes a TCI Mustang II IFS with tubular control arms, shimmed alignment options, adjustable coilovers, power rack and pinion steering, and 2” drop spindles. The rear suspension consists of an adjustable triangulated four link with coilovers, polyurethane bushings and spherical rod ends.
Fuel System: Incorporates a custom-fabricated, centered aluminum fuel cell in place of the factory tank to accommodate for the unique exhaust design. An in-tank Walbro 255 lph fuel pump feeds a return-style fuel system with a firewall mounted Aeromotive boost-referenced regulator.
Exhaust: Hand fabricated from the header flanges to exhaust tips. 3/8” thick steel Doug’s header flanges are affixed to 14 gauge 1.75” primary tubes to form tight-fitting long tube headers. 3” mandrel bends were used to tuck the exhaust into the transmission tunnel above the Heidt’s subframe connectors, chassis x-brace, and driveshaft loop. Rear-mounted stainless Magnaflow mufflers add a deep growl while directing heat and resonance away from the passenger compartment. The exhaust tips were rolled and fabricated from 14 gauge steel and powder coated to match the GT rear valence with smooth ¼” gaps.
Wheels and Tires:
Budnik Velocity R 17”x8” front and 17”x10” rear were custom built to fit the redesigned suspension and track width dimensions. The rims were finished with a brush aluminum hoop with black powder coated center including brushed rivets and center cap. The steering wheel is a Budnik Velocity R with the same finishes. The tires are Nitto NT555R Extreme staggered 235/45/17 in the front and 285/40/17 in the rear.
I hope you like the smell of leather – 100 sq. ft. (3 large hides) were used for the interior and trunk. No vinyl here except for the OEM-style reproduction moonskin headliner. The 1967 deluxe brushed aluminum dash was patiently modified to seamlessly incorporate Autometer Sport Comp aluminum gauges. The S197 Mustang seats, driver 6-way power adjustable, were recovered in smooth-grain black leather with stitching and bolsters to replicate the modern GT500. The rear seat was reconstructed with custom foam and leather stitching patterns to compliment the design of the front. The trunk received equal attention with a flat floor covered in matching carpet and full closeout panels covered in black leather. A full-length center console was built and overlaid with aluminum and leather to accommodate the Saleen supercharger gauge package, Pioneer AVIC F-900BT entertainment system, push button ignition, Vintage Air control panel, S197 5 speed shifter, e-brake, power window buttons, and console. The door panels are hand crafted from aluminum and leather with machined trim and countersunk fasteners. Various functions of the car are actuated from the illuminated black billet push button switches in the console which include ignition on, start, headlights, radio accessory on, electric fan override with indicator, and trunk popper. The ElecrticLife power windows have dual controls with the options of the console switches or remote operation. The doors open by the use of an AVS remote kit with HD solenoids, spring loaded door thrusters, and professional-grade remotes. Additional amenities include a late model auto dimming rearview mirror with compass and ambient temperature gauge, Vintage Air heating and air conditioning, hidden AM/FM amplified antenna, billet Lokar pedals with hydraulic clutch and remote reservoir, accessory 12V charger port in the center console, four-way courtesy lighting, power driver seat, Flaming River tilt steering. Many items were subtly relocated for vastly improved ergonomics such as the brake-clutch pedal spacing and shifter offset.
A Pioneer F-900BT is at the heart of the infotainment system. 3D GPS navigation, Bluetooth, HD radio, AM/FM, Sirius, XM, iPod, and CD/DVD are all easily selected via a 5.8” touch screen display in the console. Four Pioneer 50W speakers are strategically located in the kick panels and rear quarter panels for a surround sound experience. A BOYO wide-angle, color backup camera is located in the black billet license plate frame. The GPS antenna is located at the interior base of the rear window for an excellent view of the sky. The startup “splash screen” has been reformatted to the current Mustang chrome “running pony” with Ford options as found in the latest generations of Mustang.
