This rare, triple-white 1977 Volkswagen Champagne Edition Super Beetle Convertible showing 6,491 miles (TMU) is 1 of 1,000 sold by Volkswagen of America for the model year. There was just one available for each VW dealer and prospective dealer. These special-edition cabriolets were identified by the striking Alpine White exterior and Light Ivory (or light sand) colored top, complimented by the Cameo White leatherette interior. There was a gold stripe just above the running boards on each side of the body that was not re-applied when the car was repainted. This vehicle was sold new with dealer installed AC with all the equipment still present except for the compressor. The 60-horsepower, fuel-injected 1,600-cc air-cooled flat-four engine is the most powerful offered new in a VW Beetle to that time. The wheels have been upgraded to chrome Empi style wheels.
The Super Beetle was introduced in 1971 and all Volkswagen Beetle convertibles would be based on that model through the end of production. The Super Beetle was essentially a major chassis upgrade, with MacPherson struts replacing the torsion bar suspension that other Beetles used. The change improved ride and handling, tightened the turning circle, and yielded a bit more trunk room. For 1973, the Super Beetle gained a curved windshield and new dashboard. All ’73 Beetles and beyond featured the new, large round taillights nicknamed “elephant feet.” Solid California car all of its life! $21,900
