Vehicle Description
Engine No. 187.920.03410/52
As noted on a copy of its original Data Card, this Mercedes-Benz
220 Cabriolet A was delivered to Hamburg, Germany, on 12 April 1952
in splendid Blue (DB320) over a Grey Leather (955) interior. The
Mercedes is believed to have remained in its native Germany for the
next 67 years, until it entered the Lone Star Sports Car Collection
in November 2019. Prior to arriving in the United States, it was
thoroughly restored by the marque experts at Arthur Bechtel Classic
Motors of Bblingen, Baden-Wrttemberg, with the goal of
participating in the numerous rallies and tours previously enjoyed
by its owner, including the California Mille and the Colorado
Grand.
After carefully disassembling the entire car, the bodywork was
restored and refinished in Dark Red (542) while the interior was
retrimmed in burgundy leather with tan piping and matching
carpeting, with a matching burgundy soft top. These colors were
specifically chosen to complement the livery of the 1960 300 SL
Roadster it would share garage space with as part of the Lone Star
Sports Car Collection. The detailed restoration continued with
mechanical work to ensure that the engine compartment and
undercarriage were finished to a concours level of presentation,
matching the exacting standards the Bechtel team is known for.
Fully restored, the car emerged as a standout example of the
Cabriolet A and was ready to be imported to the U.S. in
mid-2020.
Upon its arrival, an electric cooling fan was added to the radiator
by Red Car Restorations of Rockwall, Texas, in August 2020 for
additional cooling capacity. Displaying just 459 kilometers or 285
miles since its complete restoration, the combination of careful
storage and extremely high-quality restoration work leaves the car
in splendid condition today. In addition, the 220 Cabriolet A is
fitted with a matching three-piece luggage set and is offered with
an instruction manual. As a result of its stunning restoration work
in Arthur Bechtel's workshops, its next caretaker will have the
opportunity to enjoy the bliss of luxurious 1950s open-air motoring
and will surely be a contender at any of the numerous concours
events it is also eligible for.
