Vehicle Description
Chassis No. 915811
Engine No. SS928114
Alfa Romeo's 6C 2500 was introduced in 1938 as the final iteration
of Alfa Romeo's Vittorio Jano designed six-cylinder road car. A
wide variety of coachwork options was available, and this exclusive
car was one of the most expensive of its day. Well-known 6C 2500
owners included King Farouk, Prince Rainier, and Rita Hayworth. The
top-spec Super Sport models were fitted with a triple carburetor
setup and rode on a shorter 2,700-mm wheelbase than the longer
wheelbase Sport and Turismo models, allowing for the best possible
handling dynamics.
A Mille Miglia eligible model, the 6C 2500 Super Sport represents
the finest blend of performance and luxury of its time, and in an
era before Ferrari had established a practice of selling customer
road cars, was undoubtedly one of the most formidable cars one
might encounter on European roads. This was evidenced by the 6C's
overall victories in significant international races such as the
Mille Miglia.
This beautiful Cabriolet, chassis number 915811, wears two-place
coachwork by Pinin Farina clothing its Super Sport chassis. It is
documented in the seminal work on the model, Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 by
Angelo Tito Anselmi, that it was delivered at the very end of the
Forties, on 30 December 1949, to I.T.A.C. Spa of Rome, Italy. It is
believed that the Alfa Romeo would remain in its original ownership
for over a half century, into the 2000s, receiving a light
restoration along the way. After changing hands in 2007 to an
Illinois based collector, the Alfa was taken on the Midwestern show
circuit, being displayed at events such as Meadowbrook and the
Glenmoor Gathering, as well as capturing the Pat Braden Award at
the Alfa National Meet.
By 2016 the Alfa would find its next owner who elected to entrust a
comprehensive restoration of the car to Salzano Studio of Miami,
Florida. It is understood that the Alfa was stripped down to its
chassis and refinished in its present red over a dark brown leather
upholstery. Following its restoration, the Alfa was displayed at
Concorso Italiano in 2017, capturing the "Best Alfa Romeo"
award.
Acquired by the Lone Star Sports Car Collection in 2019, the Alfa
has received additional cosmetic and mechanical sorting totaling
over $15,000, with the work carried out by Red Car Restorations and
ADC Enterprises, both based in Texas. The Weber 45 DCOE-9
carburetors were sent out to be rebuilt by Pierce Manifolds, while
a variety of body fitment items and cosmetics were attended to.
Today, this splendid Alfa Romeo is a vivid reminder of Vittorio
Jano's legacy showcasing the marque's extraordinary 6C engine. Its
beautiful Pinin Farina Cabriolet coachwork is a stunning example of
one of the final iterations of the 6C story, and it remains
eminently eligible for many of the world's most prestigious
automotive events.
