of motorsport by the late 1920s, despite the company being just a
few years old. In an era dominated by the powerful "Speed Six"
Bentleys, the American outfit proved that solid construction and
smart engineering could challenge the established order. The 1929
24 Hours of Le Mans saw the Chrysler Six's achieve a remarkable
feat, with the stripped-down Series 75 Roadster of Stoffel/Benoist
and Series 77 of de Vere/Mongin securing impressive sixth and
seventh place finishes overall, and fourth and fifth in their
class. The Chrysler 75's success wasn't limited to the Circuit de
la Sarthe. In the same year, it claimed victory in the hands of
Leonardi/Barbieri in the 5.0-liter class at Italy's grueling Mille
Miglia, further cementing the 75's reputation for performance and
reliability.
At the heart of the Chrysler 75's success was its advanced
inline-six engine, featuring a 249 cu-in displacement, seven main
bearings, an L-head design, and an 84 horsepower output in
road-going trim. This powerplant, combined with the car's other
innovative features like hydraulic brakes and Lovejoy shock
absorbers, created a package that was both fast and reliable -
essential qualities for endurance racing success.
