Vehicle Description
This custom 1984 Volkswagen Vanagon camper pop-up is a one-owner
Westfalia model and a Wolfsburg Edition. Over the years most of the
Camper Package has been upgraded with new equipment, including a
second battery kit with a built-in charger, which charges both
batteries whenever electric power is plugged into the left-side
receptacle. The 4-cylinder, water-cooled engine has been replaced
with a 6-cylinder Subaru conversion, which is an SVX unit. With the
new engine in place, the next step was to overhaul the 4-speed
transmission and replace all the gears in order to match the new
horsepower. The water faucet, outside LP propane tank and inside
refrigerator have also been replaced with new units. The front
driver's seat and passenger seat have been replaced with tan
leather replacements by RECARO. The front-window dash and other
inside panels were then covered with leather matching the RECARO
tan, and the outside rearview mirrors were converted to electric
operation. A number of temperature and pressure gauges were added
to the dash, along with an aviation compass at the rearview mirror.
The gauge cluster was also replaced with a printed circuit unit
from GoWesty. Floor coverings were replaced with matching CocoMats,
and the folding-roof side covers were also replaced with new fabric
panels. The folding lower rear-seat panels were kept, but they now
also have a set of the mattress panels from GoWesty. All the
underside and suspension items have been replaced with new,
including springs, shock absorbers, brake items, CV joints and
steel bearings. It was fitted with a set of 15/6.4 alloy wheel
hubs, and a South African upper front grille was added in order to
install new high-power headlamps. A metal step was added to assist
entering the right-side sliding door. The original outside paint
colors for this Vanagon were the same as always used on the
Wolfsburg Edition vans - Merian Brown over Toscana Beige - but
those original colors were too hot for the consignor after moving
to Arizona, so it is now painted Harvest Moon Beige over Campella
White, which are both are Volkswagen colors. Air conditioning was
added at the dealership and was later expanded to include both rear
and front units.
