Vehicle Description
1955 Chevrolet 3100 Pickup
The Chevrolet Task Force was Chevrolet's successor to the Advance
Design series. The Task Force Series ran from late 1955, (second
series), through 1959. At GMC dealers, it was called the Blue Chip
Series. Designed by Ned Jordan, Chevrolet's Task Force pickups
blurred the line between passenger cars and trucks. They were more
comfortable and roomier than previous Chevy trucks, and they
offered stylish features like a wraparound windshield, hooded
headlights, and an egg-crate grille
For consignment, a nicely buttoned up and truly one of a kind 3100
series pickup from Chevrolet and right out of 1955. Some major
changes to the body, in our consignor's words, creating a fully
miniaturized version of the original with a AirMaxxx air ride
slammed stance, some chopping, channeling, shaving and pie-cutting
of the steel and fiberglass. Hundreds of manhours went into the
shrink fitting and panel alignment alone to make this truck stand
out from your run of the mill street rod truck, if there is such a
thing. A fully custom frame, fabricated rear axle, a huge boost in
the powertrain department and some convenience options added to the
interior keeping you a notch above the rest. Appearing extra racy
with a power flip forward hood, a customized truck, with custom
mixed paint and the ability to rip it up a bit and haul some stuff
or just some ass!
Exterior
A fully customized hue of Corvette Switchblade Metallic Silver
covers this step side version of this 3100 series hauler and
presents beautifully with its tinted bronze hue and 4 coats of
clear. My reflection in the paint was nearly mirror-like and I was
tempted to break out my Remington Lectronic shaver for a quick
touch up. Single chrome bezel headlights reside under a very 1950's
eyebrow at the front of each fender and a fantastic custom
horizontal and vertical barred chrome grille floats just above the
Switchblade Silver roll pan. A bulbous hood sans badges or
ornamentation now is electrically operated to tilt forward exposing
the eye candy underneath, more on that treat later, and is flanked
by the sleek swooping fenders on either side. We note this hood has
been pie-cut to produce the wonderful lower meaner look. A
wonderful wrap-around Lexan windshield and all other "glass"
surrounds the passenger compartment and is looking just dandy. A
slight chop was given to the roof to keep the proportions just
right and we note the fiberglass doors have been shaved of their
handles and are made of lightweight and durable fiberglass. Right
behind is the step side bed with bolt on fiberglass rear fenders,
all of which have been treated to the skillful custom touches
during the 10 year long build. Speaking of the bed, it too has been
given the full custom touch with a hand fabricated bed floor that
holds the air tank for the air ride system as well as having slots
cut for the upper control arms to travel when the bags are fully
drained. We also note a custom rolling sectional bed cover and the
bed floor has been lined with coarse finish Raptor bed lining. The
entire exterior of the body and bed are razor straight, and gaps
are well minded. The tailgate has been blended into the body and
there is absolutely no rust on the exterior of this truck. 18 and
20-inch Chicago Mob wheels in red are wrapped by low profile
radials on all 4 corners.
Interior
The hits keep on coming with a complete redux of the inside. Red
heavily padded leather with vertical ribbed stitching, padded
armrest, and a black speaker give some definition to the smooth
panel shiny handles. Inside, late model red leather wrapped bucket
seats with tuck and roll inserts and smooth body hugging oversized
bolsters flank a custom red leather console. Within the console is
the semi-gated shifter, polished cup holders, toggle switches for
the air ride and power windows and AM/FM/Sirius/Bluetooth capable
radio by Clarion. All of this isfloating in a sea of clean black
carpeting. Fronting all of this is a retina searing red painted
custom full metal jacket dash with centralized AutoMeter brushed
aluminum bezel round gauge clusters with black faces and white
lettering. Polished billet wing-like trim flows out from the gauges
toward the doors and adds some class to all the red. Above is a
custom headliner in red leather that does a perfect job of
disguising the integrated roll cage and its decorative bracing.
Drivetrain
A push of a button and the big hood floats itself forward exposing
even more bling in the engine bay. More coarse finish Raptor liner
coats the inner fenders and firewall and compliments the 468ci Mark
IV V8 nicely. This is a 4 bolt main block fitted with a Crower
hydraulic street roller camshaft and a Lunati valvetrainwith 1.7
roller rockers. MSD ignition is in charge of lighting the fire
within and a Holley 850cfm double pumper carb feeds the
preciselytuned mixture of air and fuel through an Edelbrock Torker
aluminum intake manifold. A TH400 3-speed automatic transmission is
on back which pushes power rearward through a custom high
performance driveshaft to the rear tires via a Ford 9" Speedmaster
TDS rear axle housing. Power steering is on, and power brakes are
also a welcome upgrade.
Undercarriage
Underneath is painted in black coarse Raptor lining finish for the
custom steel framing, floors and suspension all showing not even a
spec of surface rust. An independent airbag suspension is on front
and a 4 link and airbags are on for the rear with QA1 shocks all
around. Wilwood disc brakes are now on the front and rear and we
note professionally done wiring with underbody and underhood LED
accent lighting. Headers snake their way down to custom hand built
stainless steel dual exhaust complete with stainless mufflers
integrated into the custom made side exhaust.
Drive-Ability
This truck roared to a start and accelerated like it was on fire to
the test track and on it as well. It handled beautifully and came
to a quick stop. The leather seats are a plus, and there are plenty
of gauges to distract your attention on the dash. One must be
careful to pay attention to the tape lines on the power windows as
to not over extend them and the same goes for the power hood that
was built without stops.
A nice build with all the boxes check on the fit and finish, paint,
interior and drivetrain. A few small nuances on the custom power
windows and hood that can easily be rectified but still a looker
with all the custom bodywork and perfect miniaturizedproportions. A
neat looker and a hot cooker, we give you the 1955 3100 custom
hauler ready to haul the goods and all the while hauling ass or
even when riding low and slow.
