in 1996, Ferraris new Pininfarina-designed 550 Maranello replaced
the Testarossa-based F512 M and heralded a long-awaited return to
the front-engine V-12 Ferrari GT-car layout, one not seen since the
365 GTB/4 Daytona. While based on the longer Ferrari 456 and
sharing its 5.5-liter engine, the 550 Maranello was distinctly an
upmarket GT car, and while strictly a two-seater, it offered
spacious and luxurious accommodations and plenty of storage space
to go with its immense all-around performance, including a top end
nudging 200 mph.The 550 Maranello was and remains a very important
modern Ferrari. At launch, it represented a decisive return to the
companys 1960s/1970s road-car heyday with its awesome front-mounted
V-12 engine, manual gearbox, and classically gated shifter. The 550
Maranello also helped propel the company to its many future
successes during the 2000s and beyond. Today, these cars are simply
awesome to drive, with exceptional balance, thanks to their
rear-mounted transaxle. Visually, they are sinewy and purposeful in
appearance, and their Pininfarina-devised styling cues will
