Rarely do you find a turbo charged coupe, as most were convertibles. Made in General Motors? Willow Run, Michigan factory (VIN code W) during the second week of March 1964, this car came with the following options ? Muncie wide-ratio four-speed manual transmission; Positraction; Comfort and Convenience Group, two-speed wipers, ?no glare? rearview mirror and exterior sideview mirror; tinted windshield; simulated wire wheels; padded dash; and pushbutton radio. Joseph E., of Butte, Montana, traveled 40 miles to Boulder to buy this 1964 ?Vair from Franchi Chevrolet on May 27, 1964. He traded in a 1963 Corvair and paid the new car?s balance as cash-on-delivery (COD). Wearing Saddle Tan (code 932), the car?s paint and trim are in overall very good order. This is reportedly the car?s original paint and shows a realistic patina as such. The bodywork is straight and solid and the engine bay is very tidy. The car?s chrome bumpers and bumper guards look great and fit tightly to the car?s body. A full-size spare tire mounted on a black wheel is tucked in the engine bay, too. Out back is 164 CID flat, air-cooled and turbocharged six-cylinder engine, making 150 horsepower, which was eye-opening at that time. The motor is mated to a Muncie wide-ratio four-speed manual transmission (code M20) and backed by a Positraction rear axle (code 355R). The engine has a harmonic balancer and an 11-vane cooling fan made of magnesium. New parts include ? tires, fuel tank, battery and brakes. The engine has been recently tuned and received an oil change. Inside, the car?s Saddle Tan Vinyl interior (code 705) is mostly original except for the new carpet. The car?s mostly flat floor makes the interior appear larger than it is. The front buckets and rear bench seats look great, as does the matching headliner. A two-tone, two-spoke steering wheel is in good, original order, as are the inner door liners and the padded dash. A floor-shifter and factory AM radio round out the interior. Significant engineering changes were introduced to Corvair for 1964, while the model lineup and styling remained relatively unchanged. The engine displacement was increased from 145 to 164 CID by an increase in stroke. An improvement in the car's swing axle rear suspension occurred with the addition of a transverse leaf spring along with softer rear coil springs designed to diminish rear roll stiffness and foster more neutral handling. Spring rates could now be softer at both ends of the car compared to previous models. The heavy-duty suspension was no longer optional, although all models now had a front anti-roll bar as standard. Brakes were improved with finned rear drums. Documentation includes original owner?s manual, original options guide, original car invoice, Chevrolet custom accessories guide, a 1984 Motel 6 Directory, original mortgage payment agreement, various receipts and other documents. Competition to this Corvair in 1964 included Chevrolet?s own Chevy II, Ford?s Falcon and new Mustang, and Plymouth?s Valiant and Porsche 356. If you are new to Corvairs or you already own a few, consider adding this one to your collection. It runs and drives well and would make a unique addition to anyone?s garage.
