For Sale: 1967 Chevrolet Camaro in O'Fallon, Illinois

Vehicle Description

Gateway Classic Cars of St. Louis is proud to digitally present to you this incredibly historic 1967 Chevrolet Camaro. This Camaro was built by Bill Grumpy Jenkins and Dicky Harrel and if you are a vintage drag car enthusiast then the livery will tell you the story! The Great Gary Kimball, AHRA World Champion, won the 1969 Super Stock/Pro Stock Champion in this 1967 Chevrolet Camaro. In 1967 this Camaro was rolled off the line and sent to Bill Allen Chevrolet with a custom ordered no engine and transmission package and was given to Kimball & Hill racing as a sponsorship opportunity and then sent directly to Grumpy for the full Jenkins treatment. Grumpy sent this vehicle to Penske Racing for an acid dip that removed 200 pounds which started the transformation on this race legend. Grumpy then put this car on a frame machine to remove the cross member and relocate it forward which would allow easy access to drop the oil pan for maintenance and pre-race inspections. Additional modifications were made to the frame to relocate the steering box to a more forward position and was recessed into the frame which allowed for easy removal of the header to maintain and have access to the heads and top end of the engine. Grumpy also took a set of closed chamber heads and converted them to open chamber which allowed for better valvetrain flow leading to more horsepower. Once Dicky got his hands back on the vehicle him and Jim the "Animal" Lieberman went to work on the heads and valvetrain creating an extremely potent top end to sit on top of the L88 427CI motor, dated with a 1967 vin code. Mated to the behemoth motor is a custom Doug Nash 4+1 Transmission rebuilt by Liberty Transmission, a staple in the drag racing community, this transmission is dated to 1971. Inside you will find a stripped down but fully functional interior which holds on to the classic styling that the Camaro had to offer. Originally the roll cage was fabricated out of exhaust tubing to help cut down on weight, just a subtle trick of the trade at the time. It has currently been refabricated in steel tubing during the restoration. Out back you will find a stock Oldsmobile rear end with a 5:13 ring and pinion gear that was a huge help on getting this Camaro down the track and that complied with all legal racing requirements for the racing class of the time. Up front you will find period Cadillac brakes on it that allowed for better stopping power once the vehicle reached the end of the track. The wheels and tires are also date coded 1967 to the era and you will notice the front rims have ring locks on them so the tires would not cut when the front end came back down to meet the track. As a result of this sudden reconnection with the pavement the shock towers were staggered to each side to displace wheel toe when the vehicle front end lifted the ground from pure inertia. Outside you will see the classic style and livery that was used during this Camaros prime time on the track. Although you may have seen this vehicle in multiple outfits the classic livery from the 1970 NHRA Grand American Nationals was the obvious choice of outfit for the restoration. You will find this vehicle has exceptional paint and all the gold graphics were laid in real gold flake, the additional decals were professionally installed to match the classic styling of this 1970's drag car. There have been a few alterations and modifications during the restoration of the vehicle for example the original acid dipped doors are included however have been replaced with a more driver friendly set as well as the original transmission with Grumpy stamp is included however has been swapped with the brute Doug Nash unit currently in the vehicle. During restoration, the roll cage was reconstructed by the famous Jerry Hass to meet legal requirements and he remembers this car well from its glory days. One key item that is original to the vehicle was the custom fiberglass removable front end that was the 3rd fiberglass unit ever created as part of a prototype mold by ANA Racing in California. This vehicle has an incredible history and was purchased by the late Dale Ruff where he continued to race for many years to come in this exact vehicle. Dale went on to win 2 national events with this car as a part of the 7 National events won in this vehicle. The history and provenance of this vehicle is unmatched to all things in the vintage drag race world, and this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to own one of the greatest cars in drag race history! Have a listen to the audio description attached to our video for more information and please feel free to call with any questions regarding this vehicle.
