Vehicle Description
2012 Chevrolet Colorado
The Chevrolet Colorado, and its counterpart, the GMC Canyon, are a
series of compact and later midsize pickup trucks marketed by
American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to
replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. It
is named for the U.S. state of Colorado. In March 2011, Chevrolet
revealed the prototype version of the all-new Colorado at Bangkok
International Motor Show. It was shown as an extended cab with a
rear access system, and some of the high-tech equipment. In June
2011, Chevrolet revealed its crew cab in adventure concept at
Buenos Aires, Argentina, (this car also shown at Frankfurt Motor
Show in September 2011), and in July 2011, a Holden version of
crew-cab version concept got its premiere at Australian
International Motor Show. The production model is available in
three different cab styles: regular cab, (single cab), extended
cab, (space cab), and crew cab, (double cab), and may either be 4x2
or 4x4.
Presenting as a wolf in sheep's clothing, this truck is anything
but fuel efficient, nor does it even have a thought as to the Arab
oil embargo! This truck can be used on the street or the strip and
is a far cry from its humble beginnings as a light duty hauler.
Sporting a pro built 3-speed automatic, new LS series V8 with a
who's who list of speed parts, very nice paint, new exhaust and
like new wheel and tires. Presently poised for takeoff in our North
Mallway, this truck is ready to haul a lot of things, but mostly
ass.
Exterior
Let's start upfront, a very good place to start, where we see a
simplified horizontal spit grille in body color sporting a black
bowtie with mesh backing, single aerodynamic headlights are mounted
down low with matching turn signals just above. A steel cowled
hood, straight steel fenders and doors all finished in the factory
color of Techno Gray Metallic encompassing the entire truck with
the only deviation being the black trim around the passenger
compartment tinted glass. Gaps are all well minded, and nary a ding
or dent is noted. A black tonneau cover is on the bed which is
lined with a spray in liner and holds the fuel cell, battery box,
and brackets for a nitrous oxide bottle all finished in aluminum.
Weld Racing S77 wheels, 17" in the front and 15" in the back are
wrapped with Mickey Thompspon 275/60R15's and skinny 7.50x4.0R17
rubber on the front. A clean tailgate in more Techno Gray is
flanked on either side by the factory taillights and down below is
a molded in roll pan sans bumper with the exhaust tips poking out
and a kill switch on the lower right.
Interior
This truck retains most of its stock charm and utilitarian style
with charcoal black plastic and vinyl panels throughout the
interior. The door panels are as stock as they come and look
showroom new with a mix of black plastic, charcoal broadcloth and
chrome for the door release. Turning our attention to the inside,
we see a pair of lightweight racing bucket seats wrapped in black
and charcoal vinyl covers. A Winters Sidewinder shifter sits in the
center of the hump and all of this floats in a sea of lightly
soiled charcoal gray carpeting. A Grant steering wheel with a
thickly padded rim and transbrake button sits proudly atop an
aftermarket steering column and fronts the modified dashboard.
Directly in front of the driver is a Holley EFI cluster display
with full digital gauges and to the left is a kill switch and push
button for the starter. In the center of the dash is another switch
panel highlighted by a faux carbon fiber surround. Now the party is
really rollin'. Last one in the pool with a suit on is a rotten
egg!
Drivetrain
In keeping with the unique and the straight line go fast theme,
under the hood we note a consignor stated 6.0 Liter V8 all
assembled with ARP hardware and with worked over LS3 cylinder
heads, a BTR stage 4 camshaft, a LS3 intake and injectors with
Holley fuel rails and a 92mm throttle body. A new pro-built TH400
3-speed automatic is on back with a reverse valve body, transbrake,
and a Yank performance torque converter. The rear axle is a
performance-built Ford 8.8" design with a spool and 3.55 gear set
and Moser axles. The engine bay is all business with a topside view
of the suspension as the inner fenders have been removed for the
sake of weight savings.
Undercarriage
All black and all solid underneath with the frame and floor pans
are structurally sound and only minor surface rust on the usual
suspects. Power disc brakes are here upfront as well as an
independent coilover suspension with QA1 shocks and tubular control
arms and on the rear, more power discs with leaf springs and
Caltrac bars. Seen are stainless headers which snake their way down
from the mighty LS and have electric cutouts or can flow to the
back of the truck via a pair of dual race mufflers to ensure you
will be not only seen but heard.
Drive-Ability
In a word...fast and loud, but that was two words, and I
digress.... This custom Colorado smoked the test track and the
tires and worked all just swimmingly. All functions were working as
they should, and it was an exciting test drive, which when
finished, left with a smile on our faces. I believe it's high time
for some less than legal midnight street races through the quiet
village of Morgantown, PA.
A party for your right foot, and your eyes in the interior with its
clean racy appearance. Great paint and wonderful rodded custom
looker and cooker. Pass the "dutchie" to the left-hand side...Party
on Garth!
