Vehicle Description
During the years 1950 through 1974, Oldsmobile's most profitable
line was the 88-Series, especially its entry level priced Dynamic
88. Oldsmobile began making station wagons again after a 6-year
hiatus, bringing the Fiesta Wagon to showrooms in 1957 adding even
more styles and options to their beloved Eighty-Eight line. As the
second World War ended and more families were moving into the
suburbs the station wagon seemed to be revived at the perfect time.
The 1958 Eighty-Eight model became famous for its extreme amount of
chrome trim commonly referenced as the "King of Chrome", and the
Fiesta wagon's large size was perfect to showcase it all! Receiving
a major restyle for 1958, a full width horizontal bar grill laid
perfectly above its massive new chrome bumper. Underlining its new
dual headlamps on both sides were chrome spears that ran straight
down the side stopping after the front doors. The distinctive round
taillights were designed to look like active jet exhaust.
"OLDSMOBILE" was spelled out on the front edge of the hood with
high block 2.5" lettering that really jump off the paint. With all
the windows down, the pillar-less design version gave almost a
convertible feel to this station wagon's passengers.
This 1958 Oldsmobile Dynamic Eighty-Eight 4-door Hardtop Fiesta
Wagon is truly a rare find. Under the hood is an impressive 371ci
V8 fitted with the performance upgraded J-2 engine option of adding
3x2 carburetion to produce 312hp paired with a Jetaway Hydra-Matic
automatic transmission. Additional options include power steering,
power brakes, factory A/C, heater with defrost, chrome rooftop
luggage rack, fold down rear seats, day/night rearview mirror,
deluxe AM/FM radio and E-Z eye tinted glass windows. Even with
101,410 miles, this 88 Fiesta Wagon has stayed in largely original
form and has been lovingly cared for. The Onyx Black exterior paint
really lets the chrome stand out and complements its original
Ivory/Black cloth interior that has a wonderful stitching pattern.
The original hubcaps are in great shape and paired with 235/75R14
Coker Classic radial wide whitewall tires.
This Fiesta Wagon remains in terrific condition and was located by
a Louisiana collector in June 2019 when it was offered from the
Texas estate of Steven Brooks Gremmels. After sitting for several
years in a garage after his passing, it required some proper
attention to make safely drivable again. At the initial servicing,
all 3 carburetors were rebuilt and chrome air cleaners were added,
as well as having the brake booster, master cylinder and all new
brake linings rebuilt by the trusted and well-known team at White
Post Restorations. It only had 200 miles on a freshly rebuilt
transmission when the pandemic started, so repairs were put on hold
once again, then in December 2020 a new fuel pump, distributor cap,
rotor & condenser, along with fresh spark plugs installed. In
January of 2021 new front & rear shocks were installed as well as a
front sway bar link kit before receiving an alignment, and a brand
new headliner fitted.
The St. Louis Car Museum would purchase this Fiesta in August 2021
and continued work to restore this beautiful wagon to a roadworthy
status. In December 2021 it received a new battery & ground cable,
new engine oil & filter; harmonic balancer rebuilt, new timing
gasket set, front main seal was replaced, and all new drive belts
installed; A/C drier was rebuilt, new A/C hoses and the system was
charged, new coolant check valve installed; new front lower sway
bar bushings, transmission mount replaced, all four brake wheel
cylinders were replaced; an electric choke installed, select vacuum
lines were repaired or replaced; new heater hoses, headlight
switch, and a under hood pad installed.
