1956 Chevrolet 210 Wagon
The 1956 Chevrolet sedan delivery is a rare find. Though many were
produced in the late 50's, because they were used as work vehicles,
few are left and even fewer are in good shape. They were built to
use as milk trucks, delivering groceries, stuff like that, and they
used them up and then they were gone. Many just rotted out. The
1956 Chevy delivery is a sought-after collectible among car
enthusiasts and thankfully can be recreated out of a 2 door station
wagon if you are so inclined.
For consignment, a creation of a rare bird in the form of a '56
Chevy Sedan Delivery made from a 210 2-door wagon. Still retaining
its fold down rear seat and bathed in Pinecrest Green now with a
283ci V8 there is plenty of power for the haul, or delivery in
classic style. And with this rear cargo area windows filled in
there is plenty of room to slather your business name on there and
attract some attention.
Exterior
An older restoration for the exterior, but it still maintains its
shine and is rust free. It does have a few areas of cracking and
crazing of the paint, and some chip offs at the gaps, but these
remain well minded. We also note the front fenders are fiberglass
and have some distinct cracking on the driver's fender that has
been repaired and covered in gray primer. 1956 was the year of the
beginning of fins and they are accentuated by the trim side spear
which runs from the front of the door and gracefully swoops down to
meet the rear bumper. Not to be outdone, the front grille surrounds
a now black egg crate design, has visored single headlights on
either side, and below all of this is a trimmed short front bumper.
A jet age rocket leads the way on the hood along with a large shiny
V emblem hovering below. Sedan delivery panels have been installed
where the original side glass was and are highlighted by stainless
trim. We note that most of the chrome work on the car has dulling
and pitting but still retains a decent shine. Also of note are the
rear wheel openings, which have been trimmed at some point in the
past to accommodate larger rear tires. 15-inch rally wheels are
wrapped with staggered width radial rubber on the corners. A shout
to the rear brake lights with the nifty round ball taillight with a
small square backup light below all within a lamplighter styled
bezel.
Interior
A blank canvas if you will is the best way this writer can describe
this cavernous interior. All stamped steel for the doors as the
panels have been removed but still retain their chromed cranks and
door release as well as a worn black armrest. Slipping inside we
are met with well worn gray leather ergonomic late model bucket
seats in the front and the factory two tone gray and white vinyl
fold down bench seat in the rear. As we get comfortable in these
buckets, we can gaze upon the original metal dash in Pinecrest
Green. The well known and loved twin fan dash is present and
accounted for with the gauge cluster in front of the driver and
speaker and clock with Chevrolet in your grandmother's script. The
radio has been removed leaving a clean factory opening and the rest
of the dash is peppered with aftermarket gauges and various chrome
knobs. The carpeting has been removed exposing the black texture
painted flooring which is covered with simple black rubber
floormats. Up top is a stained but complete white headliner.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is now a consignor-stated 283ci V8 that has been
punched .060 over. It is topped with an aluminum intake manifold
and Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor and has a Muncie M20 4-speed
manual transmission circa 1970 on the back. Bringing up the rear
end we see a Pontiac 10-bolt 3.55 geared Safe-T-Track rear axle.
All nicely detailed with a red/orange block, ribbed aluminum valve
coverings and supple hoses and rust and corrosion free bolt
ons.
Undercarriage
All redone underneath with a strong solid frame, flooring and
rockers, all of which have been undercoated in black. Some surface
rust has appeared on the usual suspects, but no invasive rust is
noted. Independent coil spring front suspension is on with new
control arms, the uppers being tubular style and for the rear we
note leaf springs with traction bars. Rust free dual exhaust with
Cherrybomb mufflers is on for the exhale and we see power front
disc brakes working with power rear drums brakes. It's ready to
haul...some ass!
Drive-Ability
A quick starter and smooth runner. All comfortable for these late
model buckets, and with no power steering it is still a breeze to
drive. All functions were well...functioning at the time of our
drive.
A respray in Pinecrest Green for this once 210 wagon turned Sedan
Delivery easter egg, retaining its shine, and not often seen in
this sedan delivery style. With the undercarriage and suspension
redone this 283ci V8 powered hauler is just a few steps away from
being your pride and joy or a promo piece if there ever was one for
your business, just imagine "your name here".
