For Sale: 1966 Chevrolet Corvette in Clifton Park, New York

Vehicle Description

Facing the horsepower wars raging in the mid-1960s, Corvette Chief Engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov played his ace card, making a 396 CI version of Chevrolet's fire-breathing Mark IV engine available in the Corvette for the first time in 1965. The first big-block V-8 in Corvette history displaced the legendary 327/375 HP fuelie small-block, an exclamation point after three years of rapid Sting Ray development that included improved noise insulation, better cabin ventilation and 4-wheel disc brakes as standard equipment.

Arkus-Duntov raised the stakes again for model-year 1966, increasing big-block displacement to a full 427 CI (the official NASCAR limit). As always, a contingent of potential Corvette owners wanted a piece of the action without the extra attention demanded by a solid-lifter engine, to which Arkus-Duntov responded with the "milder" L36 employing 2-bolt main-bearing caps, cast aluminum pistons, smaller 2.065-inch diameter intake valves, a smaller-bore Holley carburetor on a cast iron intake, 10.25:1 compression and a hydraulic camshaft. Still, the L36 was more potent than any "Fuelie" 327, delivering 390 HP at 5,200 RPM and 460 lb-ft of torque at 4,600, numbers that attracted almost as many buyers (5,116) as the solid-lifter 425 HP L72 (5,258).

Beautifully turned out in Mosport Green (a color only available for the 1966 model year), this 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible boasts a Born With L36 427/390 HP V-8 in combination with a Muncie 4-speed manual transmission. The car has all the makings of a classic big-block, 4-speed, midyear Corvette, the bulging hood and N11 Off Road Rear Exit Exhaust announcing the brawn lurking within and goldline tires on finned aluminum, knock-off wheels adding extra style to the visuals. Optioned with a black standard interior, an AM/FM radio with power antenna, and a Telescopic Steering Column, this 1966 427 4-speed Sting Ray coupe presents in superb overall condition throughout, with excellent detailing complementing its highly desirable combination of big-block drivetrain, optional extras and brilliant color scheme Along with some of the most prestigious awards achievable in the corvette hobby!
