For Sale: 1990 Jeep Cherokee in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1990 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer

AMC started work on its new compact SUV in the late Seventies, when a group of engineers (some from Renault) started sketching an all-new Jeep as successor to the full-size Cherokee the company already produced. The Euro-American collaboration proceeded to the mock-up stage, with clay bodies based on the extant SJ Cherokee/Wagoneer. AMC assigned Dick Teague to finish off the Cherokee's looks, and also told him to work up a four-door version. While the project was ongoing, AMC heard about the two-door S-10 Blazer coming from GM and wanted to one-up The General. The design was the first unibody 44 vehicle outside of military use and meant the XJ was much more modern than the body-on-frame SJ it replaced. It was also more capable off-road with greater wheel articulation, and a newly designed Quadra-Link suspension which reduced the tendency to roll over. Worth a mention is the extended production of the XJ Cherokee abroad. Though Jeep wrapped up the XJ in 2001 domestically, it lived on at three brands in China, all of which produced their own version. Shuanghuan made their XJ through 1997, Beijing Jeep through 2005, and BAW kept one in production through 2014.

For consignment, a Jeep Cherokee Pioneer that could very well be one of the nicest left in existence. Back in 1990 a doctor was in the market for a new Jeep to replace her aging one and fate collided and this not oft seen Pioneer became her new pride and joy. With every service record dating back to day 1, the original window sticker, a modern Bluetooth stereo, and recent tune up and now it's good to go...through anything all while wrapping you in the lap of Jeep luxury.

Exterior
With its 4 doors, factory roof rack, and a repaint in the factory Black Cherry Pearl exterior paint which is in very nice condition this Jeep is ready to haul you and your ski bum pals to the nearest slopes for a day of fresh powder carving. The slab sided panels, front bumpers, and plastic parts are all fade free for this 4 wheeler. A perfectly straight barndoor like front grille is flanked by a pair of single glass headlights and just below is the shiny front bumper. Pin-striping is also accenting the Black Cherry steel and it's in gold. We note some invasive rust forming at the bottom of both front fenders which has bubbled the paint to a Alpine peak texture. All glass is clean and clear as are the surrounding trimmings. More Black Cherry for the large flat tailgate, and with hydraulic pistons to help out, raising and lowering is a cinch. 15-inch turbine style aluminum wheels, showing some clear coat delamination, are wrapped in like new Firestone Destination rubber on all corners. All squared off and buttoned up for this beauty.

Interior
Wonderful mixtures of smooth tan leather panels, black plastic, and some carpeting below form the door panels. Not oft seen in the modern era manual window cranks adorn these panels to let fresh air in. Inside seating is all vinyl bolsters in tan, along with tan diagonal ribbed broadcloth for the inserts. An all original dash, in tan with black instrument panels inserted inside are clean. More convenience options abound throughout this dash as well as a digital AM/FM/Bluetooth radio, (the original unit is included), and the heat and AC slides. A long smooth console races between the front buckets and holds an armrest/storage console, automatic shifter and the pull handle for 4wd engagement. Nice clean carpeting covers the floors and is in an upholstery matching tan color. The long headliner is nice and tight and the carpeting in the back storage area is clean as well with its stainless protectors/slides. Plenty of room is available for your gear or any snow bunnies you may encounter along the way.

Drivetrain
Seen under the hood an original engine bay with some "patina." A 4.0 liter inline 6-cylinder engine is present. It is fed with EFI, and on the back is a A340 4-speed automatic, throwing power to a 3.07 geared axle. A 3 position, (2wd, 4hi & 4lo), transfer case is on to assist with any avalanches or ravines you may encounter on your way to the lodge.

Undercarriage
Overall nicely preserved with slight surface rust on some bolts and the leaf springs. All else is very sound with no rust to be seen. Suspension is a Quadralink with coil springs in front, and leaf springs for the back. Power disc brakes are upfront and power drums for the back. Both axle gearboxes are dry, and no leaks are seen.

Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and it runs great. We did not get to see if it will climb every mountain, but I can tell you that based on our test track drive, it should do so with ease. All was functioning well during our drive and the steering wheel mounted audio controls helped to drown out the "are we there yet" mantra that kept coming from my partner's mouth.

A low mileage example which has been well cared for and faithfully maintained since new. This well-preserved vehicle is ready for some action, be it your daily commute or weekends trips to show off your slalom skills. Saddle up and carve a new path with this Pioneer....this writer will stay safely in the ski lodge with his Chardonnay awaiting your return.
