1969 Chevelle SS 396 Convertible - Numbers Matching VIN and Trim
Tag - Documentation.
Don't miss out on this one! A real-deal, numbers matching,
396/350hp '69 Chevelle convertible in excellent condition. This one
is ready to show, and even better - it's ready to drive to the
show! The photos of this beauty give the impression that the
restoration was done recently, especially the incredible paint
quality and finish. The reality is, this one was redone in the mid
to late 90's and it's apparent that time and money were not a
concern seeing the quality of this "SS" twenty-something years
later. Factory options include: Power steering, power disc brakes,
power top, bucket seats with console, AM radio with 8-track player,
sport gauges with 5500 rpm redline tach, and posi-trac rear end
differential spinning 3.55 gears. Also included are many documents
related to the original vehicle build, the restoration, and
ownership history.
The restoration started by separating the body from the frame and
mounting it to a rotisserie to allow easy access to every part of
the shell from top to bottom - inside and out. The frame was
completely stripped, media blasted, and repainted semi-gloss black
as GM would've done from the factory. All of the suspension
components were either reconditioned or replaced. Countless hours
were spent preparing the body for the correct (code 52) Garnet Red
exterior color then rubbed out and finished to a smooth glossy
shine that still receives attention and compliments to this
day.
During the body and frame reassembly, it was decided to go through
the drivetrain components and give them the new life they deserve.
The engine was completely disassembled and inspected - then the
numbers matching engine block was completely machined, the original
crankshaft was polished, rods reconditioned and the rotating
assembly was balance checked. The short block was assembled with
new rings and bearings, oil pump and seals. The camshaft was
replaced with the exact 396/350hp spec'd cam with new hydraulic
lifters and factory style timing chain set. The correct cylinder
heads were gone through and treated to a valve job and new valve
springs. The final engine assembly was performed using all of the
correct, numbers matching components including the cast iron intake
manifold and Quadrajet 4-barrel carburetor.
Following the engine rebuild, the factory installed Muncie
transmission was gone through and resealed, while the correct 12
bolt posi rear end was inspected, resealed, and verified that the
stock 3.55 gears were intact.
Finishing the project required some updated interior components.
New front and rear seat covers were sourced in the factory trim
color "Black", along with matching door panels, rear side panels,
and a new carpet front to rear. The dash and "SS" gauge cluster
with 5500 rpm redline tach are in excellent condition and the
original stock center console with Hurst shifter show how well this
Chevelle was cared for. The original convertible top was in great
shape but had a small tear, so fairly recently, a brand-new factory
black replacement was installed.
Wheels and tires are factory 14x7 Super Sport wheels with "SS"
center caps and correct trim rings wrapped in 205/75/14 Coker Red
Line Radial tires on all 4 corners.
This car truly drives like a dream. It's quiet going down the road,
no rattles, shifts perfect, and has plenty of power! Don't miss out
on this opportunity to own a high-quality piece of automotive
muscle.
