This 1939 Ford pickup seems to make everyone smile. With its big fenders, round grille, and tapered body it has that attractive pre-war styling that seems synonymous with the word “classic”. This one has seen a recent refurbishment that has resulted in a truck that drives as good as it looks.
This example is all steel with great looking body panels, without the dings or dents you sometimes see on old pickups. The black paint is an appropriate color and shines nicely on all those gorgeous curves. The bumpers have been rechromed as well. The attractive bed was completely redone and is a great complement to the black body. The red wheels are adorned with V8 hub caps and trim rings and feature Firestone wide whitewall tires.
The Flathead V8 was a big sales feature over the inline 6 found in competing brands. This engine is smoother and more powerful than you might expect. The 3-speed manual transmission works good too (though you do need to double clutch these old unsynchronized boxes). There are no surprises when driving and the brakes have plenty of stopping power. Note that 1939 was the first year for hydraulic brakes in a Ford pickup.
The interior is all about utility (as was the case in 1930’s trucks) and is in good condition throughout. The bench seat was recovered and the metal surfaces repainted. The headliner was also replaced. The dash has the basics with a speedometer and set of gauges along with a starter pushbutton and choke / throttle knobs. There is a suicide knob mounted to the large factory steering wheel which has both headlight controls and the horn button at its center. A turn signal mechanism has been mounted to the column as well. The crank-out windshield, cowl vent, and door windows all operate properly for plenty of ventilation.
Old pickups can mean different things to different people, but I think this era does it best. Anything older and you have underpowered drivetrains with primitive mechanicals. Anything newer and you lose that special shape. This one delivers a truly classic look in an easy to drive pickup with V8 power, all in a beautiful wrapper that is ready for duty.
