Vehicle Description
1968 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe
During the design and initial construction of the Camaro, the car
had the name "Panther." The 1965 concept bore the Panther emblem,
and it retained the name until just a few weeks before the car
debuted. However, Chevy always intended to give its Mustang
competitor a "C" name to conform to its Corvette, Chevelle, and
Corvair models.
Not all muscle cars were born that way, some were pedestrian 6
cylinder run of the mill cars when they started life. This LeMans
Blue Camaro is one of the transformed. Starting life as a
6-cylinder Camaro it now sports a 454ci V8, 4-speed manual,
transmission, spoilers, and a cowl induction hood. All the glitz
without the fear of driving an original and much easier on the
wallet!
Exterior
A very nicely done color change from Ash Gold to the present LeMans
Blue. A white wraparound grille type stripe makes its way rearward
as a spear, culminating at the end of the door panels. New SS and
454 clean badging are seen on the front fenders as well as the
grille, and rear gas cap. A small but effective rear spoiler is
attached in matching blue, and a cowl induction hood has been added
to allow the engine to breathe easier. Chrome drip moldings, window
surrounds, handles mirrors and brite work is all in very good
condition with nary a sign of any pitting, or fading. Period
correct American Racing Torque Thrust wheels are on all corners and
are wrapped in blackwall rubber for the front and raised white
letter rubber for the rear.
Interior
The new interior presents cleanly and all black. Front buckets and
a rear bench sit above that new carpet with Camaro embroidered
floor mats, and all is clean in here. Original dash shows well, and
a Hurst shifter sits proudly on top of the hump and between the
seats is an aftermarket consolette. Some aftermarket gauges hang
from the dash, as well as a column mounted tachometer. An
aftermarket AM/FM/cassette stereo is mounted flush into the dash
and replaces the factory radio. Headliner is tight, and the trunk
has a clean but slightly stained black rubber mat and shows no
rust.
Drivetrain
A very clean, header added 454ci V8 sits within a restored engine
bay. Chromed valve covers and cleaner can be seen and a 750cfm 4bbl
carburetor feeds the air and fossils. This mill is attached to a
4-speed Saginaw manual transmission that sends ponies back to a
12-bolt rear axle
Undercarriage
Like new exhaust with FlowMaster mufflers, clean tubing is fed via
long tube headers. The unibody and floors are painted black and are
rust free, as a bonus subframe connectors tie the front and rear of
the unibody together. Independent coil springs provide the ride up
front while leaf springs give the rear ride. Power disc brakes and
power drums are on front and rear, power steering is noted and as
per our consignor new brakes, pads, shoes, ball joints, coil
springs and shocks have been installed.
Drivability
I let my partner in crime and muscle car aficionado take the wheel
for this ride and I took the passenger seat. With the turn of the
key it's a quick starter, and a bit of time to warm up, and we were
off to the test track. This car has Jesus bar grabbing
acceleration, decent handling, and good brakes. We noticed the
heater blower, the wipers, and the radio did not operate. The
interior was very nice and smelled new!
A really nice example of the 68 Camaro Coupe, runs great, starts
quickly, and can smoke the tires or sit there and win trophies. It
doesn't get any better than this "Go-tie" Chevrolet pony car.
