were the best for the El Camino. - Chevrolet El Camino
retrospective, Chevy Hardcore website The Chevy Hardcore website
writers provided more of the El Camino's history: The El Camino was
introduced to the Chevy model line-up in 1959 as a competitor for
the Ford Ranchero, only to be discontinued after the 1960 model
year. But in 1964, Chevy brought back the model, this time based on
the Chevelle rather than the Brookwood station wagon like the
previous generation. The El Camino was a hit and stayed around
until 1987, after Chevy changed the platform for the car to the
Malibu in 1978. Offered here is a tastefully restored, refreshed,
and re-powered 1971 El Camino in red pearlescent over custom
red-and-tan. The car's odometer shows 40,332 miles, or about 800
miles per-year on average. The El Camino's exterior paint was
professionally applied and retains an even, glossy finish (with
some age-related patina) across the entire car-pickup body. The
color choice made for a striking look, very much an updated
original presentation as opposed to a far-out custom presentation.
The front grille was re-done in gloss black. The entire cargo box
is painted in the body color and shows minor wear from light use.
Original chrome bumpers are in good condition, with wear-indication
on the rear bumper. Chrome trim on the body, including on the
73-inch-long cargo box top-edge trim and cabin-glass trim, has been
well maintained in very good condition. All but two badges in the
grille have been removed; the Chevrolet bowtie and name emblem
remain mounted. Cabin glass and lighting lenses throughout are
clear and uncracked. The El Camino features chrome, 5-spoke Holley
Rev® wheels (100 Classic series) mounted with Cooper Cobra® Radial
G/T raised-white-letter tires. Inside, there's more evidence of the
custom work in the red-and-tan combination. The single bench seat
has been reupholstered in red vinyl with accenting white stripes.
The same two colors are incorporated in the redesigned door panels.
Black, square-weave carpets cover the cabin floor. The
dashboard-original to the car-is tan, with signs of aging.
Instrumentation is stock El Camino including slide levers for the
heat and air conditioning. A Sony audio head unit is installed in
the factory-radio location with its auxiliary components hidden in
the glove box. The shifter for the automatic transmission is
mounted on the steering column. Under the hood, the replacement 350
cubic-inch General Motors V8 features added flair in the form of
cast Edelbrock® valve covers and chrome air-cleaner cover. The
engine bay is clean with components properly installed with hoses
and wiring correctly routed. Viewed from below, the chassis is
complete and undamaged. The full-length, performance dual exhaust
is a focal point. The car's original data tag remains mounted.
