Vehicle Description
1928 Ford Model A Roadster
In 1927 feeling the heat from his competition, and after a long run
with the Model T, Henry Ford reluctantly retooled his assembly
line, changed some of his part manufacturing processes, and the
Model A was born. Eventually it would become wildly popular,
outselling the Model T, and offered in 9 different body styles.
This wonderful car which is best described as a driver that
participated in many an AACA tour has come here to Classic Auto
Mall from a consigner who did a few upgrades for that touring.
Still retaining its shine with a few faults but it drives great and
looks the part.
Exterior
A deep ocean blue, (blue with a slight green cast), covers the
metal panels of this roadster. Some areas of bubbling are noted,
and the hinge to the cowled hood is showing some rust formations.
Contrasting black fenders, and light blue pinstripes, are also
painted and show well. A warm slight greenish hue gray is painted
on delicate looking wire wheels with their now cast-iron drum
brakes in the centers. These are surrounded with wide white wall
thin tires, and on either side nestled in the back portion of the
front fender just before the running boards are a spare tire
wrapped in a tan canvas covering. A rumble seat, as well as an oak
slat wood and chromed flip down trunk holder is on after the rumble
seat. A single driver's side period taillight and split dual bar
chrome bumpers. The front of the car has vented metal side panels
that fold upward to reveal the engine compartment. A perfect
grille, topped with a chromed cap is flanked by 2 oversized
headlamps, an original chromed front bumper, and an ahooga style
horn. The passenger compartment is covered with a black canvas top.
Also wing windows hang off of either side of the windshield and are
etched and have a round rear view mirror on both of them.
Interior
Saddle colored brown vinyl covers a bench seat and is slightly
loose but in very nice condition. Black rubber ribbed flooring is
covering the floor. Up front the metal dash, also in ocean blue
color, has a centrally located "mask" style chromed instrument
cluster, which shows original gauges. A period style extra-large
steering wheel, tall shift lever, as well as a handbrake can be
seen in the compartment. For extra safety during those tours seat
belts have been added.
Drivetrain
Under the cowled hood is a 201ci 4-cylinder engine that ticks and
runs like a switch watch. Not in perfect condition, with some
surface rust and black paint surrounding the engine a bit chipped,
but a new 3-speed manual transmission has been put on approximately
5 years ago. Also, in lieu of the generator, an alternator has been
installed.
Undercarriage
Retaining its rust-free condition from the restoration that
occurred many years ago, just black painted steel, solid body
hangers and cast-iron drum brakes now on, and solid stamped steel
floor pans. Transverse leaf springs are on all 4 corners and
mechanical drum brakes as well. A glass pack style muffler is
installed.
Drive-Ability
The highlight of this car despite its good looks and good
condition, is definitely the drive-ability. A made for touring in
style of the roaring 20's, this car accelerates nicely, and
actually runs along at speed, (45-50mph?), easily. Shifting is
smooth, and all seems tight and squeak free. All functions are
working as they should.
Reluctantly the time has come for someone else to take tender
loving care of this wonderful 1928 Model A roadster. Fully restored
many years ago, diligently maintained, and a described "good
driver" will allow the new owner of this beautiful piece of Ford
history to drive it right out of the Classic Auto Mall and begin
enjoying it immediately. Ahhhhhhooga!
