Vehicle Description
1970 Pontiac Firebird Coupe
Are the Firebird and Trans Am the same? The truthful answer is yes
and no. While all Trans Am's are Pontiac Firebirds, not all
Firebirds are Trans Am's. This is due to Trans Am's being a type of
Pontiac Firebird started as a specialty package in 1969. The Trans
Am essentially took the Firebird's performance to the next level.
Compared to their Firebird counterparts, Trans Am's offered
upgraded horsepower, handling and suspension. Through all four
generations, you could purchase a Trans Am instead of the base
Firebird if you wanted to take your performance to another
level.
For consignment and your eye enjoyment, a 1970 Firebird coupe.
Fully restored with some extras thrown in, and now looking very
racy. This excellent driver utilizes a Formula fiberglass hood and
a Trans-Am rear spoiler. GM provides the Bermuda Blue paint, and
Rally 2 wheels now in menacing black. Always garaged, never raced,
and well maintained.
Exterior
The first thing noticed about the Firebird is the front end, with
its "Endura" plastic bumper that encases the grille and headlights.
Since the bumper is the color of the car, it gives a unique
bumper-less appearance. Consigner states the paint has a flex agent
in it to prevent cracking of the Endura material covering. Bermuda
Blue is the color and it is looking great from the 2006 respray.
The headlights have been upgraded to halogen and these have clear
LED halos. A dual scooped Formula fiberglass hood is on and the
grille is an iconic split design with the Pontiac beak. Moving
rearward, the car does not have much trimming save for the rocker
and around the glass, and it's all in excellent condition. A
beautiful sloping rear glass and small trunk deck leads into a
Firebird rear spoiler. This frames "bird beak" shaped taillights
and there is a lower chrome bumper below. 15 inch Rally 2 wheels in
black coating are wrapped by like new blackwall tires. A side view
of this car shows a great stance.
Interior
A swing of the black vinyl covered paneled doors which are
excellent, shows off the interior which looks like new. Black vinyl
in shiny condition covers the front buckets and rear bench. The
center console also in black is also excellent. Up front the
machine turned swirl pattern dash has been added, and it houses all
original gauges. This is fronted by a new Formula steering wheel.
Also within the dash is a modern Bluetooth capable Kenwood
AM/FM/CD/MP3 player. 4 speakers throughout the cabin belt out the
tunes for those longer cruises. A/C was originally installed,
however due to the headers being put on it has gone by the wayside.
Black carpeting covers all the floors, and a tight black headliner
is above. Original options like power steering, power front disc
brakes, a rear window defroster, drivers remote mirror toggle and
an electric trunk release are on and working.
Drivetrain
Under the dual scooped hood, is a pristine engine bay which
includes a rebuilt 400ci V8 from 1976. This engine has roller
rockers, a performance cam and performance reworked 6X heads. On
back is a performance heavy duty TH350 all rebuilt and purposed for
track use, but never raced. There is a 2500 stall converter kit,
and this has less than 6K miles since its rebuild. A Rochester
carburetor in 4-barrel format is atop, and a 10-bolt 3.42
positraction rear axle is now installed. Noted are headers, 3-inch
exhaust with a H pipes and Flowmaster mufflers.
Undercarriage
All is looking good underneath with very little surface rust even
seen anywhere. Suspension and axles were replaced by the car's
prior owner, and now there are air shocks on the rear. Power disc
brakes are in front and power drums for the rear. I'll give it an A
grade for the undercarriage restoration.
Drive-Ability
A quick light of the 8 fires and off to the test track I was. Here
performance shone brightly, and handling was excellent as well.
Solid braking, and all was working just swimmingly.
The culmination of 2 owners who really cared and upgraded the car
and now a stunning example of a Firebird coupe turned high
performance potential racer. All is there to do it, just never has
its legs stretched. Maybe you will be the one to do so?
