Vehicle Description
At the end of Fox-platform production, Ford rolled out some special
edition Mustangs, the most popular of which was this 1992 Mustang
Summer Special. Painted a unique Vibrant Red and fitted only with a
white leather interior and special 16-inch white wheels, it has a
distinctive look that makes this particular 5.0 Fox Body stand out
from its siblings. Summer Edition Fox Body Mustangs are steadily
growing in popularity and value these days, and beautifully
preserved 5-speed manual examples like this are ultra-rare, with
only 787 ever made. That means if you're reading this, you've found
a gem, and gems at this price point never last long so you better
read fast.
After the 'happy accident' success of the limited-edition 7-Up
Mustang convertible a couple years prior, Ford needed a follow up
to meet a growing demand for another special edition Fox Body. The
result was the 'Summer Special' convertible (aka the Summer
Edition, Feature Car, and Limited Edition) that was technically a
1992 example that was released mid-year. You can spot these cars
instantly, because the only color that they came in - vivid Vibrant
Red paint - is a lot brighter than the usual reds found on
garden-variety Mustangs. In addition to that paint, they're also
easy to spot with their body-colored side mirrors, door and window
trim, windshield trim, and rear quarter panel molding (most Mustang
convertibles had plain black), along with the addition of a rear
spoiler instead of a luggage rack. It's amazing how well the Fox
Body Mustangs have aged; everyone knows them and everyone loves
them, just like the early pony cars. This particular 4-owner beauty
has lived an easier life than many 5.0 Mustangs and shows extremely
well for being nearly 30 years old. The bodywork and finish are
all-original and show incredibly well for its age, with only minor
imperfections and signs of use accrued over the last three decades.
All the usual Mustang things are still nice: the cowl grille at the
base of the windshield is still dark black, not gray, the
headlights aren't cloudy, and all the weather seals are in great
shape. And the special-issued Summer Edition Opal Pearlescent white
wheels are still in place like they're supposed to be, offering yet
another unique addition to this rare Fox Body droptop. Visually
it's completely stock, even retaining the stock ride height, so if
you want one that's exactly like what you had when you were younger
or you've always admired these cars afar, they don't get any better
than this.
The white leather interior with black piping on the seats was also
part of the package, and it's one of the most handsome interiors to
be found in a Fox Body Mustang. The seats are supportive and nicely
set up for spirited driving and the gauges, all of which are
functional, remain a great example of how to get it right. These
cars came loaded from the factory, and it includes factory A/C
(which does need to be serviced), power windows and locks, cruise
control, tilt wheel, and an upgraded Kenwood AM/FM/CD/AUX/Bluetooth
stereo. Door panels, dash, and carpets are very nice original
pieces, and even the door-mounted map pockets are in great shape
and maintain their elasticity. A center console splits the front
buckets and it houses a cue-ball topped shifter that manages the
5-speed manual transmission below - an incredibly rare option with
only 787 manual transmission Summer Specials ever made. Overhead
there's a snug-fitting white power top that makes top-down driving
only a few seconds away, which is the entire point of owning a
Mustang convertible. '5.0L' branded floor mats look awesome, the
rear seat looks almost completely untouched, and the trunk is
outfitted just like it was 1992 - stock and clean.
Ford's familiar 5.0L HO needs no explanation, and it works as well
here as anywhere else. Largely unmodified (aside from regular
maintenance items and cold-air intake), this is a rare 5.0 Mustang
that hasn't been thrashed, raced, or tweaked by a high-schooler
with his first tool kit. That means it's bulletproof reliable,
torquey enough to climb a wall, and happy to run pretty much
forever on regular gas, and with a factory rating of 225HP, it's
lively enough to hang with anything out on the road today. The
engine bay is clean and well-maintained, with fresh-looking belts,
hoses, wiring, and components that mean you can pop the hood and
show the car off with great pride. It's backed by the
aforementioned rare 5-speed manual transmission while the 8.8-inch
rear end has 2.73 gears inside, so it's a very relaxed cruiser that
still likes to hustle. Even the exhaust is still a stock set-up
(although the mufflers look to be an older set of Flowmasters),
including the catalytic converters, so it's got that familiar 5.0
throaty sound but it never gets annoying. Solid and clean floors
are more evidence of an easy life and it sits on original 16-inch
Opal Pearlescent, special-edition "Pony" wheels which are still
bright white and fitted with 225/55/16 performance radials.
Offered with its original owner's manual and warranty card, this
132,728 mile (believed odometer rollover) Summer Special droptop is
an incredibly well-preserved example of a very special "modern
classic". A great combination of looks and performance, these rare
limited 5.0L Mustangs won't stay this cheap forever. Start having
