Despite the price difference, Mercedes-Benz had taken note of the burgeoning personal luxury car market overseas and saw how that segment grew as the 1970s dawned. The SL convertible and SLC coupe arrived on our shores in 1972. By 1977, the market was nearing its peak and North America was the key market; two-thirds of R107 and C107 production was sold here. This R107 SL example was made in Mercedes?s Sindelfingen, West Germany factory in October 1976. It left the assembly line with the following options ? Behr air-conditioning and power windows (code 585), insulated glass and rear window defroster (code 592), automatic power antenna (code 531), power locks (code 467) and a Becker Europa II AM/FM stereo (code 513). Finished in desirable and hard to find English Red (code 504), the car?s paint and trim are in very good overall condition while its body is straight. The cargo area is in satisfactory order, as is the engine bay. The chrome-and-rubber trimmed bumpers are in very good order. The R107 for the North American market sported four round low-output sealed beam headlights, due to unique U.S. regulations. This Benz rolls on radials, size 205/70R14 at every corner. Each tire is mounted to a steel wheel and topped with a body-colored wheel cover. The wheel covers and tires are all in good, original order. Under the hood is 4.5L SOHC 90? V-8 engine with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection (code M117). Backing the motor is a three-speed automatic transmission (code 722.201) with a 3.07:1 rear end. Inside, the car?s upholstery matches the exterior, English Red. The interior, overall, is in good original order, from the front bucket seats to the rear seat to the headliner, oversized black steering wheel and the center console and console-mounted shifter. The instrument panel and inner door panels, however, are all in very good condition. Completing the interior is a Becker Europa II AM/FM stereo. Sales in North America began in 1972, and cars wore the badge 350 SL, but actually had a larger 4.5L V8 with 3 speed auto (and were renamed 450 SL for model year 1973); the big V8 became available on other markets with the official introduction of the 450 SL/SLC on non-North American markets in March 1973. US cars sold from 1972 through 1975 used the Bosch D Jetronic fuel injection system, an early electronic engine management system. From 1974, the front and rear bumpers were dramatically lengthened, by eight inches on each end, to comply with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration regulations, that mandated no damage at an impact of 5-mile-per-hour. R107 cars were exported to the US with low compression 4.5-liter V8 engines to meet stringent US emissions requirements, yet still provide adequate power. US models sold from 1976 through 1979 used the Bosch K Jetronic system, an entirely mechanical fuel injection system. Competition to this Benz in 1977 included the Avanti II, BMW?s 630CSi, Buick?s Regal, Chevrolet?s Corvette and Monte Carlo, Chrysler?s Cordoba, Ford?s Thunderbird, Mercury?s Cougar, Oldsmobile?s Cutlass Supreme, Porsche?s 911 and Pontiac?s Grand Prix. This would make an ideal first-time classic car buy for someone just getting her or his toes wet in the classic car universe.
