For Sale: 1934 Packard Twelve in Saint Louis, Missouri

Vehicle Description

For many enthusiasts, the 11th Series of 1934 is the blueprint for the perfect classic era Packard. Meticulously engineered for driving pleasure and exquisitely styled, the 11th Series encapsulates the extravagance and glamour of the 1930s, and in many ways, is the epitome of American Classic Era design. Despite deepening economic depression, Packard continued to offer the flagship twelve-cylinder engine in the 11th Series. But economic conditions meant sales of the Twelve peaked at a mere 960 units for the year. Despite slow sales, the Twelve remained as prestigious as ever, and for the lucky few owners, there was no finer motorcar available. The powerful and refined V12 was paired with a reinforced chassis that offered superb ride quality, supple yet controlled suspension and steering, and powerful brakes. Packard tweaked the base styling with new fully skirted fenders that gracefully curved down to the front bumper, a unique V-shaped radiator flanked by V-shape headlamp lenses, and a more steeply raked windscreen. Chief among the catalog bodies was Dietrich's stunning Convertible Victoria atop the 147-inch wheelbase 1107 chassis. Aimed at the owner-driver with a sophisticated sense of style, the elegant Convertible Victoria was one of the most expensive and exclusive bodies available. Marque historian Edward J. Blend said that it "represented a design high point" for automobile design of the time. The sense of style and occasion of the 1934 Packard is virtually unmatched by its contemporaries, and to this day, few cars capture the glamour of the 1930s quite like the marvelous 11th Series. The 1934 Packard Twelve Convertible Victoria presented here is offered in superb condition, with a lovingly maintained, concours-quality restoration. One look at the exquisite Dietrich-designed coachwork is enough to understand why this is among the most collectible and widely admired of all pre-war Packards, and its handsome livery of suits the elegant lines particularly well. The body and fenders are finished in a lush deep burgundy, while the bright red of the chassis and wire wheels provided a subtle accent. The paint quality is exceptional and appears very well maintained since its restoration, displaying a smooth, glassy finish and excellent detailing. The body features period-correct options and accessories, including dual side-mount spares with body-color covers, trunk rack, chrome trumpet horns, and a striking Lalique crystal eagle's head mascot. With its fresh black-wall tires on the factory wire wheels, it has a purposeful, imposing presence. Inside, mottled burgundy leather covers the seats and interior panels. The soft trim is all finished to a very high standard and is presented in exquisite order, as expected of a concours quality restoration. Instruments, controls, and chrome fittings are in excellent order and authentic to original specification. The tan canvas top is also in fine condition, with the distinct broad blind quarters that define the Convertible Victoria with the top is up. When folded, it tucks neatly away behind the rear seats, revealing the clean, uncluttered profile. Packard's mighty 445 cubic-inch L-head V12 is very well-presented in the engine bay. Finished in the proper shade of green with black enamel accessories, it displays light signs of use on exhaust and intake manifolds, consistent with occasional touring use. These powerful and refined engines are among the finest of their time, and they are heavily favored by a great many driving enthusiasts. Few Packard Twelves are as achingly desirable as the 1107 Convertible Victoria, and this superb example will undoubtedly hold a place of distinction in any collection of significant automobiles.
