what it deserved from the start-a big honking engine and a manual
transmission. - Car and Driver, April 2004 Car and Driver continued
highlighting the key changes-most notably the larger engine and the
available 6-speed manual transmission-in the second-generation SSR:
The 5.3-liter V-8 has been replaced with a 6.0-liter LS2 V-8 that
churns out 390 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque. It's the
same engine found under the hood of the Corvette and the Pontiac
GTO, although in those cars it's tuned to crank out another 10
horses. A four-speed automatic also found in the Corvette is the
standard transmission, but for an extra $815 there's a Tremec M10
six-speed manual. The combination of this engine and the six-speed
tranny gives the SSR some rabid bite to go along with an already
hairy bark. ... Chevrolet also enhanced a few other things in the
revised SSR, most notably the steering system, which now has a
retuned valve assembly and new bearings and seals for more precise
on-center feel and a reduction in steering effort. A 2005 Chevrolet
magazine ad for the SSR put it simply: Same beauty. More beast.
Offered here is a black-on-black 2005 SSR that has been kept in
near-new condition. Showing only some 37,000 miles on its odometer,
or roughly just 2,300 miles per-year, this is a true low-mileage
example. As its Carfax demonstrates, this SSR has received regular
maintenance over its life. The condition of the exterior black
paint is excellent across every body panel; the gloss is uniform
and free of wear or damage. Black was an outstanding choice to
showcase the curvaceous design of this unique offering from
Chevrolet. The red highlights-from the bright red bowtie emblem up
front, the single red pinstripe on both sides, to another red
bowtie and red R-offer just the right touch of flair. There is no
sign of wear or imperfections on the convertible-top panels, or any
other body panel for that matter. The roof operates perfectly for
top-drown driving in this one-of-a-kind convertible-sport-pickup.
The tasteful trim piece on the grille and the brushed-metal-finish,
half-moon door handles add lovely design touches. Lighting
lenses-including on the rear LED lights-are clear and free of
damage; cabin glass is also pristine. Flawless-condition, factory
chrome split-spoke 20-inch wheels (unique to the SSR), with
bowtie-emblem center caps, are mounted with Cooper performance
tires. Inside, the well-designed black interior theme is accented
with brushed metal trim on the dash, steering wheel, doors, and
console. Black cabin carpeting is protected with SSR-embroidered
carpet mats. Leather upholstery has been very well maintained and
shows only light creasing, but no rips or tears. The
driver-oriented analog instruments are fronted by the sport-design
steering wheel with thumb controls. In the center-dash position,
the factory-installed premium audio unit remains in place above
three brushed-metal knobs controlling the HVAC. Farthest forward on
the console are three engine-monitoring gauges, with the 6-speed
shifter featuring brushed-metal knob and surrounding trim, just
behind. Every surface in the cabin, from the instrument and control
markings to the trim, is undamaged and free of even minor scrapes.
