Vehicle Description
1994 Mazda RX-7
The Wankel engine is a type of internal combustion engine using an
eccentric rotary design to convert pressure into rotating motion.
All parts rotate consistently in one direction, as opposed to the
common reciprocating piston engine, which has pistons violently
changing direction. In contrast to the more common reciprocating
pistons designs, the Wankel engine delivers advantages of
simplicity, smoothness, compactness, high revolutions per minute,
and a high power-to-weight ratio.
This Mazda is self described as having a heavy influence from the
Porsche 944 for the body design. Seen here is a 1994 version bathed
in Montego Blue Mica with saddle brown leather interior, and in
excellent condition with sunroof, and a 1.3 Liter Wankel Engine
assisted to top speed with a two turbo setup.
Exterior
Nicely preserved Montego Blue Metallic, straight gapped steel
panels with matching crash bumpers, mirrors and badging (look ma no
chrome!), are straight and minding their gaps nicely. Hidden
headlights increase the slipstream coefficient as well as the
bulbous molded neoprene crash front bumper. All nicely sculpted and
rounded, even the door handles have been designed into the back of
the doors higher up next to the B pillar. Speaking of which houses
a wonderfully curved, rounded large rear greenhouse glass that
meets up with the rear trunk edge with a spoiler on top. On the
back integrated smoothed over edge rounding taillights float above
another neoprene molded rounded rear bumper. 16-inch standard alloy
wheels are on all 4 corners. Overall exterior presents as gapped,
with several chips and some slight scratches in the finish
throughout, mainly due to previous spats with insects hitting at
high speed and unfortunate shopping cart dings!
Interior
Saddle brown leather with horizontal stitched tufting in the center
with plain piped racing inspired bolsters, and an integrated
headrest are seen in an otherwise black textured and molded
environment. These seats offer a sporty grab you but are very
comfortable. Door panels use smoothed over molded plastic in black,
and show Pioneer speakers for that added sound on the sides. A
pioneer sound system sits in the center console and gives you the
option to play CD's, or an AM/FM radio. Enough buttons to keep a
747 pilot occupied, are all laid out nicely on the dash and center
console, which also houses the shift lever. Instruments are all
original and clean and are neatly tucked under a curved eyebrow
padded dash top in front of the driver. A shout out to the sunroof
which opens by sliding back on the roof, and never really
disappearing, but adds some extra airflow and sunshine. Tan
carpeting adds to the two-tone effect with the saddle leather and
black.
Drivetrain
The Wankel Rotary 13B (1.3 liter) with a twin turbo setup for extra
kick, can put out 255HP's. EFI, and a 5-speed manual bolted to the
rear of the mill. On the back is a 4.10 limited slip rear axle.
Undercarriage
Some slight patina and a peppering of surface rust on some of the
usual suspects, but all unremarkable. Corrosion has crept in on the
cast aluminum parts, but these remain functional with the corrosion
being merely cosmetic. ABS and 4-wheel independent suspension add
to the handling capabilities of this sports car. Power disc brakes
are all around along with power steering.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter and great driver. This car is loads of fun to drive
as it corners like it's on rails and accelerates nicely. All
functions were working at the time of the drive, and the consigner
states that the original factory radio is with this car in a box if
you want to switch it out.
Overall very nice condition RX-7, mechanically sound, cared for,
and when you compare it to a 944, less than half the price. One
might say more bang for your buck. Plus, the twin turbos are a nice
kick in the bucket seat.
