The collector car market is known for its ups and downs, with some
select vehicles proving that a down economy doesn't quite affect
them the same as others. The Mercedes-Benz 280SL roadster, or
Pagoda, is definitely a good example of one of those vehicles. It
has been on a soaring price increase over the last 10 years that is
truly remarkable! And for good reason. When one looks at infamous
Mercedes-Benz autos of the past, such as the SSK, 500K, 540K, 300SL
Gullwing and Roadster, you can easily find beautiful cars from each
decade that have become seven-figure investments. That is why many
investors who missed their opportunity have turned their attention
to the 1970's generation of Mercedes-Benz SL's. These stunning cars
offer superb design, increased driver refinements, and better
performance to their owners making them not just excellent
investment choices to hang on to, but wonderful cars to drive on
today's roads.
The St. Louis Car Museum is very excited to offer this number's
matching 1970 Mercedes Benz 280SL roadster finished in its factory
correct Tobacco Brown (423H) paint over Cognac MB Tex interior with
matching Dark Brown soft top. This car is a largely untouched,
original example with exception to a cosmetic restoration. Built
originally in January 1970, the original interior upholstery,
gorgeous wood trim, and carpet were all restored with factory
correct replacements! Options include USA version VDO English
gauges, 4-speed automatic transmission, Mercedes Frigiking air
conditioning, power disc brakes, power steering, Becker AM/FM radio
(now a modern Custom Autosound AM/FM/CD/Bluetooth unit), matching
Tobacco Brown auxiliary hardtop with garnish moldings, front & rear
bumper guards, whitewall tires, dual outside rear view mirrors, and
locking Mercedes gas cap!
It was maintained wonderfully by its former south Florida owner
since May 2018. After his acquisition, all five tires were replaced
for new with complete wheel alignment, new alternator with voltage
regulator, and front disc brakes with new pads installed in July
that same year. Upon arrival to the St. Louis Car Museum in March
2021, we took the liberty to properly retrofit the air conditioning
system to R134a with new custom a/c hoses and connections. We also
replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter & strainer, and fuel sending
unit.
This car will come with front license plate bracket, radio
instruction booklet, 4 ignition keys, 2 gas cap keys, both top
removal handles, a complete trunk kit with spare tire cover, trunk
mat, original Bilstein jack, tire wedge, tool kit, and proper tire
cover. It is a remarkably solid example with correct body stampings
on the deck lid and hardtop. The stamp on the hood was rather
difficult to see. The front fender headlight notches are present as
well. Chances to purchase cars surviving in this condition are
growing extremely difficult! Act quickly as many cars of this
caliber are sought after throughout the world! The St. Louis Car
Museum reserves the right to end this listing at any time. Please
feel welcome to call with any questions!
