1963 Chevrolet Corvair Monza in Salt Lake City, Utah

Vehicle Description

1963 Chevrolet Corvair Monza 900 Convertible

VIN:  30967W138929

Viewed as a ground breaking car when first introduced in 1960, the Corvair was a departure from the norm of the big three automobile manufacturers.  Cars were getting bigger and more powerful and the compact market segment was all but left to others.  However, an exception to this strategy was the Chevrolet Corvair. Chevrolet designed a car that deviated from traditional American norms of design, powered by an air-cooled, horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine with many major components in aluminum.  The first generation Corvair, produced from 1960-1964, enjoyed a successful production run.  The bucket-seat DeLuxe trim of the 900 series Monza, produced as a two door club coupe, accounted for 80% of the Corvair production, with convertible making up about 20% of the Monza model.

The car presented at auction is an excellent restored example.  Having been acquired as a project in the 1980's, the car under went a complete restoration.  In an effort to retain or original GM sheet metal, it took 6 different cars to achieve this.  The only thing that is aftermarket is the louvered hood over the engine. The car was completed in 1989 and has been in the same family since the restoration.

Attesting to the high quality of the build, this Corvair took 2nd place at the 17th Annual Autorama in Salt Lake City. That is quite an accomplishment!  While that was a number of years ago, the car has been well cared for, was stored inside all these years with a cover and still looks good today.

Three years ago, following a few years of having not run, the car was "woke from it slumber."  The car benefited from all new springs, brakes, rebuilt carbs from Clarks Corvair, wires, plugs, points, etc. It has been driven a few times a year since the refresh, and the owner reports good running and driving condition.  This car will make an excellent addition to any garage and to the finest of collections.

This car has been consigned to the 6th Annual Salt Lake City Classic Car Auction hosted by the Classic Car Auction Group. The auction is Saturday, May 1 at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi, UT.
