For 1970 Chevrolet offered an array of Corvette engine choices. Starting with the run-of-the-mill 300 HP 350, all the way up to a 460 HP 454. The gem, though? That was the LT-1 350. In 1970 only 1,287 Corvettes were ordered with the LT-1 option. This was the driving enthusiasts’ choice, and it’s quite easy to see why. A relatively lightweight 350ci V8 with 370 horsepower, and 380 lb.ft of torque was coupled to a 4 speed manual transmission. No power steering, and no power-sapping air conditioning here, either. But what was so special about an LT-1? Why is the LT-1 known in enthusiast’s circles as the ultimate small block? Here’s just a few reasons: Forged, high silicone content TRW pistons with slipper skirts; pressed chrome steel wrist pins; 20 oz. connecting rods with ⅜ inch bolts; 11.0:1 compression ratio; forged, cross drilled, internally balanced crankshafts; high lift, solid lifter cams; and sizeable 2.02 inch intake and 1.60 inch exhaust valves housed in specially designed aluminum cylinder heads. Throw a Winters cast aluminum intake on top of those heads, and feed it through an 800 CFM Holley carb, and magic happens.
