Continental-The Last Great American Luxury Car
€"curbsideclassic.com, February 2017 The Lincoln Continental
review above (by all means, search it out on the internet for the
entire Continental story) continued: What defines a true luxury
car? A genuine luxury item is recognized as such because it has
sufficient exclusivity, style, quality and prestige to set its
owner apart from the masses. What's more, it must have
presence-€"the ability to at once command attention and instantly
make others aware of the fact that this is something truly out of
the ordinary. (The) Lincoln Continental was the last American
luxury car that did just that. And you know what? More than a
half-century later, it still does. Offered here is proof of that
statement in the form of a 1965 Lincoln Continental Convertible in
platinum (with a perfect hint of blue) metallic-over-light-blue
leather. Its convertible fabric top is ivory. Showing just under
100,000 miles, this classic bit of the Sixties has traveled under
2,000 miles per-year on average, and was thoroughly re-commissioned
in 2010, including a professional repaint and complete
re-upholstering. The results speak for themselves. The exterior
paint is in excellent condition with near-perfect gloss across the
impressive expanse of the body's generous proportions, and only a
few minor signs of wear. If making an entrance was an owner's
desire, this Lincoln delivered... and still does. The bespoke
suicide doors with their perfectly symmetrical handles still
generate oohs and ahhs today. The fabric convertible top is free of
damage. Full-wheel covers bearing the Lincoln logo and thin-stripe
whitewalls are mounted. Cabin glass and lighting lenses-including
on the stunning taillights-is in excellent condition. The
extensive, but tasteful, chrome trim retains its shine. The front
grille with its quad headlights is unmistakably Lincoln, so much so
that the brand only recently attempted to bring the design back to
its SUVs. On the hood, the stand-up Lincoln logo is automotive
artwork. Inside, the design statement was very much influenced by
the European aesthetic. Pleated leather on the seating surfaces is
mirrored on the door trim. Chrome and brushed metal grace trim and
switchgear throughout, but always in a tasteful fashion. The gauge
cluster and overall dashboard design is pure Continental.
Slide-lever controls for the factory air conditioning, the original
radio (with an added current audio head unit under the dash), and
gentle cabin lighting, all captured true luxury in the day. The
two-color steering wheel with Continental logo and the chrome
automatic-transmission shifter must've regularly put a smile on the
driver's face. Underneath the hood, the massive 430 cubic-inch V8
dominates the view. The engine bay is clean and well-ordered. All
components are properly mounted. Seen from below, the car's chassis
is in excellent condition overall. Full dual exhaust pipes run the
length of the car. There is no sign of damage. The more than 125
high-definition photographs and the accompanying link to a short
walk-around-and-startup video available at the GarageKeptMotors
site accurately present the condition of this historic luxury
automobile. That said, a car of this caliber deserves an in-person
inspection by any prospective purchaser. You are most welcome to
