The 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS with the 454 CI LS6 powerplant has
achieved mythic status among muscle car collectors. It represents a
moment in time when the most powerful engine of the era was planted
into one of its most popular models. It looked like this for just
one year. It ran like this for just one year. And, an opportunity
to own one is not to be missed.
This Chevelle SS is finished in an unusual (and eye-catching)
combination of Shadow Gray paint and a red interior with black
sport stripes on the cowl-induction hood and decklid. Beneath the
sheet metal is a matching-numbers LS6 big-block, rated by GM as
producing 450 HP and 500 lb-ft of torque thanks to its 11.25:1
compression ratio, solid-lifter camshaft and big-port heads. It
takes a stout transmission to manage that much power; in this case,
the Chevelle is equipped with the heavy-duty Muncie M22 Rock
Crusher 4-speed manual, controlled by the stock Muncie shift lever.
A Positraction axle ensures even distribution of power to the
F70-14 Firestone Wide Oval bias-ply tires mounted on SS wheels.
Inside the Chevelle are Strato bucket seats split by an optional
console, as well as a three-spoke cushion-rim steering wheel on a
Comfortilt column. In the dash is the Special Instrumentation
package with a tachometer and a clock flanking the 120 MPH
speedometer. In early 1970, Hot Rod magazine tested a Chevelle SS
very much like this one and pulled off mid-13-second quarter-mile
ETs on the stock bias-ply tires, a remarkable feat considering how
much torque the Wide Ovals had to endure. "We savored every moment
in this car," the magazine said. This Chevelle was originally a
California car built in GM's Van Nuys assembly plant and delivered
to Lamb Chevrolet in National City. It has been treated to a
comprehensive frame-off restoration to bring it to its current
condition.
