The gorgeous 1966 Corvette 4-speed coupe is special in many ways.  It is in wonderful condition inside and out.  It was nicely equipped from the factory with air conditioning, power steering, and power brakes.  It is one of perhaps 1,000 Mosport Green coupes ever built.   And it has an interesting history, having been purchased new by Roy Orbison and spending time in Bob McDorman’s collection.  There is a lot to like here.

Some history on this Corvette.  It has a build date of 12-15-65 and was purchased new from Central Chevrolet in Atlanta on 1-28-66.  As mentioned, its first owner was legendary singer and Corvette enthusiast Roy Orbison.  It then spent almost 40 years with the same family, followed by enshrinement in Bob McDorman’s famous collection where it received new paint in 2005.  It then travelled to Virginia where it received loads of additional work.  Two binders of history, receipts, maintenance, and registration documents dating to 1973 are included.  The odometer reads 28,770 miles with only 3,000 of those since 1985.

This Corvette spent its life in the south which has helped keep the frame free of any rust issues.  The birdcage, fiberglass, and bonding strips all appear solid and original.  Body gaps are straight and even too.  The code 982 Mosport Green paint is of high quality and the brightwork is in nice condition throughout.  The wheels were changed to reproduction knock-offs and wear Michelin radial tires (215/70R15).

The original 327ci / 300hp short block and heads were replaced in 1980.  The engine now displaces 350ci but maintains a factory 1966 appearance with its original intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, and ignition shielding.  The original distributor has been rebuilt and there is a replacement Holley carburetor.  The engine is backed by the original Muncie 4-speed transmission and 3.36 rear end.

The car is in excellent mechanical condition thanks to a ton of recent work.  The power steering system has a rebuilt control valve and pressure cylinder.  The original power brake master cylinder and booster were restored by Steve Gregori.  There are new rotors and parking brake components.  In back are new Bair trailing arms and a rebuilt spring along with a new driveshaft and Van Steel half shafts.  There’s more; new exhaust with Magnaflow mufflers, rebuilt headlight motors, new fuel tank, 4-wheel alignment, etc.

The interior also received plenty of attention.  It was kept its original code 430 dark green vinyl which looks so nice with the rare exterior color.  The bucket seats are quite comfortable, and the teak steering wheel always looks great in a C2.  The carpet, door panels, and headliner were also replaced.  The horn, heater, defroster, wipers, and parking brake are all functional.  All lighting works properly throughout with LED upgrades in the back.  The original sound system was rebuilt and now includes an auxiliary input along with a power antenna.  And the factory air conditioning was converted to R134a refrigerant and blows cold.

This is a quality mid-year Corvette that really brings a lot to the table; celebrity ownership, great condition, desirable features, a rare color, and lots of documentation.  And with all the recent work it is a turn-key car for the next owner, allowing them to enjoy what these mid-year Corvettes are all about.
