Gateway Classic Cars Houston showroom is excited to offer for sale
this unique 1974 Volkswagen Thing. The "Thing" is technically a
Volkswagen Type 181 but was marketed in the U.S. from 1973-1974 as
the "Thing". The Type 181 is a two-wheel drive, four-door,
convertible, on/off-road, military type vehicle manufactured by
Volkswagen from 1968 to 1983. Originally developed for the West
German Army, the Type 181 was also sold to the public as the
Kurierwagen in West Germany, the Trekker in the United Kingdom (in
right hand drive), The Thing in the United States (1973-74), the
Safari in Mexico and South America, and Pescaccia in Italy. Powered
by a 1650CC boxer four and 4-speed manual transmission that are
believed to be original, this VW Thing isn't going to win many
races on the road; but that's not what a Thing is all
about...rugged, reliable transportation with few gimmicks to go
wrong, the Thing is designed to move people securely and
efficiently even through terrain you wouldn't attempt in a mere
car. This Type 181 has some unique features that you'll not find on
many, if any at all, others. For starters, it has four-wheel disc
brakes with a Primus Proportional Braking Controller, and power
front seats with built in heater feature. The cloth interior is in
good condition, and closely matches the blue areas of the exterior
paint. The two-tone exterior paint is in decent shape and helps
this VW Thing stand out at VW gatherings. It rides on aluminum
alloy wheels that are shod with a set of P185/65R15 Michelin
Defender radials, which appear to have lots of life left in them.
The driver will be pleased to have the additional gauges that this
VW Thing sports, because having both oil pressure and oil
temperature gauges are a huge benefit when you're tooling around in
any vehicle with an air-cooled engine. The beige vinyl top and
window panels are in very good shape, and appear to provide good
sealing against the elements, if you choose to "go
enclosed"...however, most will prefer to enjoy this as a
convertible, because it's one of the most entertaining convertibles
out there. Speaking of entertaining, this 1974 VW Thing for sale
has a Kenwood Excelon AM/FM/CD head unit that features many new
ways of delivering tunes to the occupants (iHeart radio, HD Radio,
Pandora, XM, Bluetooth) through the multiple speaker sound
environment. Additional features and options on this 1974
Volkswagen Thing for sale include Aluminum Alloy Wheels, AM/FM/CD
Radio, Cloth Interior, Heated Seats (heater not tested), Manual
Convertible Top, Radial Tires, and Seat belts. For more information
