The 356 was created by Ferdinand “Ferry” Porsche, son of Ferdinand Porsche Senior, and was originally conceived as a small, lightweight sports car that shared design characteristics of the Porsche-designed Volkswagen Beetle that was developed prior to World War II. Believed to have taken its name from being the three hundred and fifty-sixth Porsche design, the 356 was the first automobile to bear the Porsche name. Production began in 1948 with the first cars being built with aluminum bodies constructed in Austria and production eventually switched to Germany after Porsche contracted Reutter Coachworks to build the 356 bodies. In 1951, the 356 took a class win at LeMans, and thanks to the efforts of U.S. Importer Max Hoffman the Porsche brand had won over motoring enthusiasts from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Of all the 356 variants one of the most coveted is the Reutter bodied Cabriolet. While available during the entire 356 production, most are quick to point out that the Reutter lines compliment the first generation 356A the best. The low sitting headlamps and bumpers give a particular sporty appearance, especially with the Cabriolet top in the lowered position. These stunning design elements ensure the collectability and the desirability of the Reutter 356A Cabriolet for years to come.
