PERFORMANCE While the 2001-2004 Mercedes-Benz SL500 was an
outstanding GT car in every possible respect, a select few buyers
demanded even more, resulting in the wild SL 55, upgraded and tuned
to perfection by AMG, Mercedes in-house racing/tuning arm.
Beginning with the same SOHC 24-valve aluminum 5.0-liter V-8 engine
as the basic SL500, the hand-assembled AMG version was stroked to
5,439cc and fitted with lower-compression forged aluminum pistons,
heavy-duty bearings, cross-bolted main caps, plus a new oil sump
and more-powerful oil pump. On the top end, double valve springs,
reprofiled cams, and bigger intake and exhaust ports improved
airflow. As if those tweaks werent enough, a Lysholm-type
supercharger and intercooler boosted engine output to 493
horsepower and 516 pounds-feet of torque. Braking and suspension
upgrades harnessed the amazing performance of the SL 55 AMG, which
included 0-60mph acceleration in 4.5 seconds, the quarter-mile in
13 seconds flat, and an electronically-limited 156 mph top speed.
Roadholding was incredible, including 0.91g on the skidpad, while
braking from 70mph to 0 was achieved in just 175 feet. Retail
pricing when new was over $120,000 and these high-class performers
came just one way fully loaded with comfort features and luxurious
amenities. Not only was the SL 55 AMG the fastest Mercedes-Benz
model ever tested by Car and Driver editors to that time, it was
likened by them to a 21st-century Duesenberg, high praise
