Gateway Classic Cars Houston is thrilled to offer this sizzling
Centennial Silver 1999 Shelby Series 1 for sale! For those
unfamiliar with Carroll Shelby's Series 1, it is one of the most
unique cars that Shelby put his name on. For starters, the Series 1
was the first and only car designed, engineered and built from the
ground up, as a Shelby, by Shelby American and Carroll Shelby.
Every major component that went into building the Series 1 was
designed specifically for it, including the modified Oldsmobile
Aurora V8 320hp engine and custom ZF 6-speed manual transaxle. Its
extruded aluminum frame features aluminum honeycomb reinforcement
panels and is covered in carbon fiber and fiberglass laminate body
panels - a first in an American car. This car is #CSX 5031, is one
of just 249 produced, and was assembled at Shelby's Las Vegas
facility in 1999. The Centennial Silver looks just right on this
car, and the blue racing stripes that run from the chin spoiler to
the top of the rear duckbill spoiler add just the right touch,
combining to say "this runs better than it looks". Unlike any other
vehicle that sports Shelby's name, this one started with a clean
sheet of paper and Shelby's vision for what the ultimate
street-legal racing car should be. Equipped with modern "passenger
car" amenities, including Air Conditioning, AM/FM/CD/Cassette Radio
(8-speaker 200 watt Delco Monsoon), Cruise Control, Intermittent
Wipers, Leather-wrapped Momo Steering Wheel with Tilt, Power
Brakes, Power Locks, Power Mirrors, Power Steering, and Power
Windows, the Series 1 was pretty loaded for what's almost a purpose
built race car; yet, it's one you'd be driving yourself to and from
the race track in (and having too much fun getting there, most
likely). The high back, well bolstered manual bucket seats (with
their 3-point belts) keep driver and passenger snugly in place
during high speed maneuvers, and fit most body types well...except
the very tall, as you can read in some articles by various members
of the automotive press - if you're approaching 6' 5", you may need
different seats. The Shelby Series 1 in this offering sports the
above amenities, without any custom/special-ordered options. The
controls all fall well into hand (and "to feet"), making this car a
dream to drive fast on a good road course. The 18" diameter Shelby
wheels are made by Speedline and were considered rather large back
in 1999. With 18x10's up front and 18x12's in the back, Shelby
Series 1 cars were putting serious rubber patches on the pavement
with the OEM Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires. However, this Series
1 is equipped with BF Goodrich G-Force T/A Drag Radials at all four
corners (P275-35R18 up front, P345/30R18 out back). This amounts to
the kind of rubber contact that you'll get if you put some track
slicks on it...avoid the rain, but in the dry, most drivers won't
be able to reach the limits of the car's handling prowess. If you
do happen to head out for a jaunt without checking the weather
forecast though, you'll appreciate the fact that the convertible
top is practically unused, so put it up, slow down (a lot), and you
can make it home dry! There are plenty of magazine articles about
this car, and perhaps one of the most informative (and fun to read)
was done by MotorTrend. If you want a track-driven expose, read
that one - it will make you want this car even more! Don't miss out
on a very rare supercar, one that was designed and built by Carroll
Shelby himself - give us a call or email us before you miss out on
this one! For more information on this very rare 1999 Shelby Series
