1940 LaSalle 5227C Special Coupe
Listed on behalf of the estate of the owner.
Located in PORTLAND, OREGON.
LaSalle was known as Cadillac's "Companion Car", built from 1927 to 1940. For the final year of production in 1940, LaSalle came in two series: the model 50 "Standard" and 52 "Special." The bodies on the 52 Special models carry different styling and trim, being of limited production. One of the most stylish models was the 5227C Special Coupe. It is a masterpiece of late Art Deco design.
This particular car has lived in the Pacific Northwest for many years. It was treated to a full, off-the-frame restoration about 15 years ago and still shows nicely today. It is only due to the recent passing of the owner that it is now being offered for sale.
Body was previously stripped to bare metal and refinished in 1940 "Oxblood Maroon Irridescent" paint. It shows well today, with a deep shine and only minor signs of age in a few spots. Wheels finished in correct "Vincennes Red" with the deluxe chromed full wheel covers. All chrome was re-plated with a few small spots of wear now evident on the bumpers. Minor, but want to mention it.
The interior was fully restored with grey wool striped Bedford Cord upholstery with soft grey door panels, headliner and carpet. A lovely combination. The deluxe "banjo" steering wheel was fully restored and appears excellent today with no signs of cracking. Dashboard and window moldings correctly finished in soft gray. Excellent interior chrome and trim. Correct LaSalle rubber pedal pads. No radio or heater was installed in this car. (They were dealer options in the day.)
Turn signals are present but currently not working. All gauges work. Gas gauge reads low. Trunk is correctly finished and includes spare tire and wheel and correct jack. A set of steel fender skirts, primered and ready for finish paint are included in the trunk.

Mechanically excellent. Stored for several years, it has been recently refreshed. The previously rebuilt 322 cubic inch Cadillac-built V8 runs smooth and strong. It has had limited use since the rebuild. Rated at 130 horsepower, it has plenty of power for driving in modern traffic. 3-speed manual transmission shifts smoothly. Excellent clutch. The 1-year-only Carter carburetor was just rebuilt by "All Cadillacs of the 40's and 50's" in Las Vegas at a cost of $750. Auxiliary electric fuel pump. Under the hood is nicely detailed and appears very correct. Undercarriage is clean and rust free, with only minor detailing needed for show again. Rides on 4 Coker wide whitewall radial tires.
PLEASE SEE VIDEO OF ENGINE RUNNING.
Overall, this is a beautiful LaSalle that is ready for enjoyment on the road. With the spacious back seat there is plenty of room to bring along friends.
Priced WELL BELOW the cost of restoration today.
