Vehicle Description
The quintessential fat-fendered rod, this 1947 Ford Coupe Custom
offers big car space, plenty of V8 power, and great details that
make it stand out in a crowded field. There aren't many hot rods
that can honestly be considered daily driver capable, but this one
will make you want to slide behind the wheel every chance you get,
even if only to join you on your morning commute to the office.
Dressed in an appealing shade of Light Blue Metallic, this awesome
Ford has a familiar look that's never going to go out of style,
with those iconic fat fenders that give these line of streetrods a
unique look. So many of these post-war streetrods were restored
with over-the-top graphics and drastic sheetmetal chops, but on a
car that looks this good right out of the box, there's no need to
go overboard, so this particular '47 still retains its original
spirit. The paint looks to have been finished several years ago,
yet it still looks slick enough to hit the road in style, with only
the usual minor signs of use, but nothing major to report. The
sheetmetal is original and nothing was chopped or trimmed, and all
the factory trim pieces were left in place, so it looks right from
any angle. That means the beautiful wide grille, the stainless side
trim, and even the window surrounds, all of which add welcomed
contrast to the light blue paint. There's a good amount of money
spent on the brightwork and nothing looks out of place, even if
you're a die-hard Ford enthusiast. The car just looks right.
The attractive black vinyl interior is why you'll find this car so
appealing as a driver, with a no-nonsense look that blends original
and updated components with ease. The upholstery work is nicely
done and quite tasteful overall, with a pleated look that could
come from the 1940s, although those front buckets are definitely
swapped-in from a newer vehicle. The door panels are upholstered to
match the seats, the plush carpets below insulate the car from road
noise, and the headliner above is taut and shows that when this car
was finished years back, nothing was overlooked. Sure, it may feel
a little dated inside, but the materials are comfortable and
everything has been well cared for through the years. The original
speedometer is long gone, replaced with a later-era GM gauge bezel
that provides the driver with a much more accurate sense of the
engine's vitals, and it fits nicely inside the original dash that
retains a 1940s sensibility inside. A tilt column with a
leather-wrapped 3-spoke steering wheel make it feel more
contemporary, and other amenities include a JVC AM/FM/CD head unit,
a Lokar shifter that manages the automatic transmission below, and
an underdash R134a A/C unit that's blowing nice and cold. The back
seat is reasonably sized for full-sized adults, so it was
appropriately upholstered to match, and there's a good-sized trunk
which is simply finished to match the cabin.
It isn't a horsepower monster, but this good-looking Ford is ready
to cruise thanks to a 305 cubic inch Chevy V8. Powered by a
Quadrajet 4-barrel carburetor and performance intake manifold, HEI
ignition system, and stock-style exhaust manifolds, it's a strong
runner with a fat torque curve to get the big coupe up and running
without working too hard. A chrome air cleaner and polished valve
covers dress things up a bit and you could get big returns with an
afternoon spent cleaning and buffing the engine bay. A big aluminum
radiator keeps it cool even on hot days in traffic, and the engine
bay is nicely finished with a smoothed firewall and inner fenders.
A 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission and 10-bolt rear end mean
it's friendly around town and on the highway. Standard exhaust
manifolds and a custom dual exhaust system with Flowmaster mufflers
provides an old-school soundtrack and handsome Ridler aluminum
wheels add to the subtle rake with staggered 215/50/17 front and
225/55/17 rear performance radials.
Nicely maintained and obviously built to drive, this cool old Ford
is a painless way to get a cool old car without spending a fortune.
