The last of the air-cooled Porsche 911s, the 993 is the final
evolution of the storied air-cooled lineage from Porsche. The 993
boasts all of the innovations and refinement that Porsche learned
from building the 911 for 30+ years, creating a simple yet
distilled package of excellent driving dynamics, everyday comfort
and accessible performance. The C2S uses the same wide body as the
coveted 993 Turbo but retains the purity of the 911 with only rear
wheel drive. With an incredible amount of mechanical grip, boasting
all of the updates to the 993 platform and a direct driving
experience with enough power to get into trouble with, the 993
Carrera S is a fantastic performer in all conditions. With only 993
C2Ss sold in the US in 1998, this makes the late-model 993 a very
rare air-cooled car indeed.
This 1998 Porsche 911 Carrera S (C2S) was first sold by Williams
Auto World in Lansing, Michigan on November 29th, 1997 to James
Reichenbach. The car was optioned in black with a black leather
interior, Motor Sound Package, Full Power Driver's Seat, and a
remote 6-disc CD changer. James also had the dealer install 18"
Technology "Turbo Twist" wheels and factory Aerokit bodywork.
James and his friend David (whom later would own this car for 23
years) were both into Porsches, with James driving an SC and David
a '76 911S. Both of them were enthusiasts, and when James saw this
Carrera S at the dealership he knew that he had to have the car.
David encouraged him to buy it, and shortly afterwards James was
driving off the dealer lot with his brand new Carrera S, knowing
that this was the last year of the air-cooled cars. James drove the
car for 2 years before he became infatuated with the new Ferrari
F360, and David was only happy to encourage him to buy the Ferrari,
secretly wanting the Carrera S for himself. Another deal was made,
James got his F360 and David Baird became the proud new owner of
this C2S.
David graduated college and began working for General Motors,
quickly working through the ranks and became Lead of Engineering at
their world headquarters. Spending large chunks of time outside of
the U.S. in different countries helping with part design for GM
vendors, he grew fond of Porsche 911s during his travels. After
buying this 911 C2S from his friend in 2000, he kept extraordinary
care of the car throughout his ownership. Being an engineer at GM
for 30 years, he had a greater sense of mechanical sympathy and the
result of that is the condition of this C2S. During his ownership,
the car was garaged and serviced regularly which is noted on the
Carfax report.
David retired in 2007 after 30 years with General Motors and ended
up adding up less than 1,100 miles a year until the car arrived at
Canepa. David spoke with Bruce Canepa when he was ready to sell his
C2S, knowing that Bruce would appreciate the condition that his car
was in and the care that it was given. Shortly after that
conversation, the car arrived at Canepa's facility.
Upon arrival at Canepa, each and every collector car for sale is
put through an extensive and diligent process called the "Canepa
Difference." This includes a major and comprehensive mechanical
inspection where all systems are checked and serviced as necessary.
They also receive an award-winning concours-level detailing, a
thorough cleaning of each and every surface that ensures that every
car is a sight to behold. Finishing off with a foam-pad-only polish
to enhance the paint finish, each and every car is a perfect
example and a personification of Bruce Canepa's impeccable
attention to detail.
This fantastic Porsche 911 Carrera S comes with its original window
sticker, books, tools, service records, compressor, jack, and spare
tire, and is a fine example of the 993 air-cooled lineage. Being
the final year of the air-cooled Porsche 911s, it holds a special
place in many enthusiast's hearts as the final hurrah for the
Luftgekhlt cars. With an engaging 6-speed manual transmission,
tons of mechanical grip, an intoxicating exhaust note, and styling
that will remain in style for decades, the Carrera S really is one
of the all-time greats and begs to be driven all the time.
