Vehicle Description
1965 Buick Skylark Convertible
Known for its prolonged singing while soaring, the European Skylark
is oft seen hovering over large farmland expanses and open country.
The Skylark line of automobile produced by Buick, from 1953 through
1998, has seen many variations and iterations of design and
performance. Soaring over roads, this Skylark has sung its tune for
a few generations, some of the "hippest" during the 1960's.
This 1965 convertible example of the Buick Skylark provides the
viewer of it with a combination of 1960's cool, and early muscle
cars disguised as family sedans. One of only 598 produced 4 speed
manual convertibles, not counting the ones that are no longer with
us it is definitely lower! This year Skylark, sported some fab
seats with tuck and roll and plenty of buttons, a long trunk deck
with a bar of rear taillights stretching from rear quarter to rear
quarter A pointed nose raked forward and overall thinner and wider
car, gave the impression of speed and style.
Exterior
A white repaint, covering original blue, covers the exterior
surfaces. Virtually dent and ding free, the exterior presents
beautifully. Some slight areas of orange peel paint, a few touched
up chips and at the lower doors just a smidgeon of rust bubble is
noted. The iconic Buick trio of front quarter venting are present
on the car and are covered in chrome. Grille, dual headlights and
surrounds are in good condition with mirror-like finishes and a
Grand Sport front badge. A black canvas top is clean with no tears
or rips, and the rear window is scratch and sun fog free, can be
electrically raised and lowered. 5 spoke rally steel wheels
chromed, with Buick center logo hubs, are wrapped in thin redline
tires. A rocker trim runs the length of the lower part of this car
and shows in good condition as well. Front and rear bumpers are
blemish free.
Interior
Newly minted in 2007, the interior vinyl is in excellent condition.
Beautiful white vertical ribbing is covering the 2 bucket seats in
front, and bench seating in back. Also, plenty of buttons lined up
on the backs as well as some side chrome trim and the seats are
just fab! Door panels show white vinyl trimming, horizontal
ribbing, and more buttons, and have plenty of chrome accenting
attached. A panel of black carpet is on the bottom. A 4-speed
manual Hurst floor shifter, and an amp gauge is within a small
center console which starts at the front of the buckets and rises
to the dash. Dash chrome and black trim is in good condition with
just slight tarnish and minor scratching; however all gauges and
knobs are clear and working. The upper padded dash is crack free
and in black. Black carpet floods the floors and Buick 3 shield
badges are on rubber floor mats.
Drivetrain
A 401ci Nailhead Wildcat V8, fully restored in aqua paint is now
within the clean and restored engine bay. It is not original to
this car however is all buttoned up for the restoration. This is
attached to a 4-speed manual transmission, which is original to
this car. The 445 on the air cleaner denotes torque not horsepower
or displacement.
Undercarriage
Nice and clean with no rust, very structurally sound and lots of
black undercoating. Floorpans and rockers are smooth, rust free and
straight. Rear drum brakes are seen and for the front, new updated
to disc brakes. A stainless-steel X pipe dual exhaust snakes its
way rearward and is looking nice and polished. A like new fuel tank
hangs off the back securely, and no runs drips or errors are to be
seen throughout.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and effortless drive for the test area. Smooth
acceleration, and a smooth ride too all in comfortable confines of
the convertible top.
I imagine dad behind the wheel, flat top cut, Wayfarers, white
shirt and thin necktie, with mom next to him with her Oliver
Goldsmith Manhattans, silk bandanna covering her low beehive, and
matching paisley dress, rolling down the highway with top down
smiling and just enjoying life. This convertible is drive away
condition, can be you, 55 years later with that same smile, and
sense of satisfaction in your 1965 Buick Skylark
Convertible...goose it!
