Vehicle Description
This 1984 Mercedes Benz 380 SL Roadster - and the SL-class, in
general - are timeless classics. Made between 1971 to 1989, the SL
series is the second-longest model type produced by the German
automaker, making it one of the most desirable roadsters of the
day. It is also one reason for its resurgence today as Generation X
remembers its formative years seeing J.R. Ewing behind the wheel of
one on Dallas and Sharon Stone driving one in Casino. It was a
status symbol to show you "made it," but the 380 was so much more -
it was personal luxury.
The 380 SL model, built between 1981 to 1985, was ahead of its time
in the American market with Bosch fuel injection onboard. Although
it lacked the fire-breathing horsepower of other models, the
roadster carried a level of sophistication that made us look the
other way. The 380 SL was endeared by all, which is why it is one
of the most desired drop-tops on the market today.
This particular roadster, built in Germany with a 3.8-liter V8 and
a four-speed automatic, has been lovingly driven 221,000 miles.
However, according to the owner, the engine was refreshed less than
50,000 miles ago and runs and drives beautifully. Equipped with
power steering, the Merc steers as it should. We have checked all
the coolant systems fluids and hoses and found them to be in good
working condition.
Though the Merc has a straight body, the 36-year-old color was
fading, so we updated it with a beautiful deep Metallic Blue 3M
wrap, which compliments the chrome and Palamino interior. The car
is solid; both the hood and trunk open and close with ease. Each
door closes confidently, and all the windows operate like new. With
a bright shine, the chrome Euromeister wheels are new, with
Michelin tires mounted from the previous set.
This 380 is supplied with both a soft-top and hard-top in good
working condition. The hard-top is wrapped to match the body and
fits with ease. The brightwork and chrome on the bumpers shine
better than most cars of its age. The interior is in surprisingly
good condition for its age with minimal signs of wear. Both seats
are in good overall condition showing no wear or rips. The gauges
work as they should with clear dials.
Even today, this SL stands out in the crowd. With both tops and new
Chrome wheels, it is sure to be enjoyed. This car has been loved -
it drives better than you would expect given the miles and
everything is in great working order. Although it's not a new
Mercedes, you can still drive it in comfort and be the envy of the
neighborhood.
