Vehicle Description
The History Channel names Steve Saleen as one of a trio of
legendary performance car builders alongside Enzo Ferrari and
Ferdinand Porsche. His goal is to create street vehicles employing
proven race car technology, often from his own experience. The
specs on the engine alone exemplify this philosophy. First, of
course, is the Saleen Series IV integrated twin screw supercharger
that provides a power and torque boost at the hit of the throttle.
This one includes a dual-stage water-to-air intercooler to maximize
the blower's ability to make horsepower. As all good builders know,
you don't just bolt a blower on a motor and call it done. The
engine has to be built to handle the horses. This one is. Forged
steel crank, forged steel rods, and forged aluminum pistons are all
part of a bottom end that gives you confidence that you can go
ahead and use the power. Steve Saleen knows racing engines. The
S281 powerplant also features Saleen Powerflash Performance
Calibration. The hardware is one thing, but the tune makes it all
work. It produces a reliable 550 horsepower and the kick of 500
lb-ft of torque. A high performance clutch with an aluminum
flywheel sends the power to a Saleen Quick Ratio 6-speed manual
transmission with close ratio shifter, then through a balanced
aluminum driveshaft to an 8.8-inch rear axle with 3.55 gears.
Saleen's Racecraft (notice the name) suspension helps you stay
planted to the pavement. Stopping power aplenty comes courtesy of
4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with huge 15-inch slotted and vented
front rotors and Saleen 6-piston calipers. The rear rotors are
almost a foot in diameter at 11.8 inches. A Saleen Mustang has many
functional features that distinguish its performance and its
appearance. Up front, the splitter has a carbon fiber extension,
the hood is Saleen's own design with heat ventilation, and you'll
see the number 153 on the bumper. That's the serialized number of
this unique vehicle. Other body mods include an injection molded
TPO front fascia, side skirts, and rear fascia. It's topped off by
a large Saleen-design rear spoiler. Interior features such as a
200mph speedometer and Saleen black-face gauges fit the performance
theme. The car is comfortable at the same time. Air conditioning,
cruise control, power windows with express up/down, and Kenwood
sound offer a very liveable environment. The Saleen package is very
comprehensive and thorough. Nearly all aspects of the car receive
the Saleen touch, and there is plenty of badging to identify and
authenticate it. There are Saleen serialized plaques in the engine
bay and the dash, and handsome Saleen S281 custom floor mats as
well. Since only the best will do, the tires are ultra-high
performance Pirelli P-Zero Rosso staggered size radials mounted on
special chromed Saleen 7-spoke aluminum wheels - 20x9 in front and
massive 20x10s in the back. A Mustang is a special car any way you
slice it. Add a V8, then a supercharger, then all the very
intentional and highly functional enhancements of a builder the
caliber of Saleen, and you have a car that you can be proud to own
and to enjoy on the street or on the track. The 2006 Ford Mustang
Saleen S281 Extreme.
