Seeking the mid-1960s GTO looks and performance without the classic
GTO price? MotoeXotica Classic Cars is pleased to present this 1964
Pontiac GTO Coupe Replica with extra V-8 punch under the hood. This
car is being brought to us by a local consigner who is thinning his
collection. Finished in Grenadier Red, the car?s paint and trim
present very well overall, with only the slightest blemishes
visible at close range. The car has dual rally sideview mirrors.
The windows are clear and crack-free while the vehicle lights look
good but the rear side windows are in the fixed ?up? position. The
car?s bodywork is straight, the engine bay is extremely tidy and
the Super Start battery appears new. The cargo area is overall very
good order and the car?s chrome bumpers are in very good shape.
This Pontiac rolls on generic tires in front, size 26x7.50-15 and
Firestone Firehawk FTX radials in back, size 235/60R15. Each one is
mounted on a gray American Racing five-spoke wheel with chrome
center caps. The wheels are in very good order while the front
tires are in good, original condition and the back tires are in
very good shape. There are two extra American Racing wheels mounted
on BFGoodrich racing slicks in the trunk. Under the hood is a YS
block Pontiac 400 CID V-8 engine (#YS 56002) with custom parts,
such as a Holley carburetor, machined heads, MSD ignition, a Weiand
intake manifold and Taylor spark plug wires. There are also newer
hoses, gaskets, freeze plugs and dual exhausts. The motor is
married to a Turbo Hydramatic 400 three-speed automatic
transmission. Driver convenience features include power steering
and front disc brakes. Inside, the car has a refreshed black vinyl
interior that is in overall very good order. The low-back buckets
and front and bench seat with complementing carpet present very
well overall. The headliner is also cast in black. The original
four-spoke steering wheel is present while the black instrument
panel and door liners echo the rest of the car?s theme. There is an
Auto Meter tachometer in the dash and ancillary gauges mounted
under the dash and a manifold vacuum gauge on the console, which is
in satisfactory shape and it has a B&M shift lever. Rounding
out the interior is a modern AM/FM stereo with CD player. This 56
year old car has some needs: wipers, blower motor, horn turn
signals, brake lights are ALL inoperable and will need attention.
In 1964, the Tempest was redesigned as a more conventional vehicle
and enlarged from a compact to an intermediate-sized car with a
115-inch wheelbase and an overall length of 203 inches. The
unibody, curved driveshaft and transaxle were gone, replaced by a
traditional front engine, front transmission, body-on-frame, and
solid rear axle design used by all of GM?s other cars but the
Corvette and Corvair. Together with its sister cars (the Oldsmobile
F-85/Cutlass and Buick Special/Skylark), the Tempest/Le Mans moved
to the new A-body platform shared with the new Chevrolet Chevelle
and all three cars received updates and modifications standardizing
them throughout?including the wheels?by GM edict. The Le Mans name
was discontinued as a separate series, so now the cars were, in
ascending order, base Tempest, Tempest Custom and Tempest Le Mans.
The popularity of the high-performance 326/336 CID V-8 in the
Tempest-based LeMans package the year before prompted Pontiac to
give the option a special, sporty name: the GTO, after the Italian
abbreviation ?Gran Turismo Omologato? used to designate specially
equipped street cars homologated for racing (though the opposite,
producing a mandated minimum of street-legal race cars to meet the
homologation requirement, is the norm). Coupe competition to the
GTO in 1964 included American Motor?s Rambler Typhoon, Buick?s
Skylark Sport Coupe, Chevrolet?s Chevelle Malibu SS 396, Ford?s
Fairlane Sport Coupe, Oldsmobile?s F-85 Cutlass and Plymouth?s
Belvedere. If you?ve always wanted a Pontiac GTO but never thought
you could afford it, you owe it to yourself to check out this
replica version with a 400 CID V-8 at MotoeXotica Classic Cars.
