In 1989 Porsche introduced a limited edition 911 intended to
celebrate the great 356 Speedsters of the 1950s. Based on the
3.2-liter 911 Carrera, the new Speedster was built on a
Turbo-specification chassis and equipped with premium cross-drilled
brakes with four-piston calipers. The model was clothed with
distinctive new lightweight coachwork with a wide-body Turbo stance
that featured a raked and lowered windscreen, and dual humped
fairings that replaced the rear seats while stowing the retractable
soft top. Only approximately 2,100 examples were built worldwide,
including just 819 cars that were specified for North America,
lending the commemorative model an added degree of rarity.
Benefiting from long-term storage and minimal use, this remarkably
low mileage Speedster is a particularly desirable example.
Completing assembly in July 1989, chassis no. 173811 was finished
in traditional Guards Red and upholstered with black leather, as
noted on the original dealer invoice. Factory equipped with a
limited-slip differential, a rootwood dash panel, raised steering
hub, heated left seat, short shifter, full power seats, cruise
control, and a radio with CD player, the 911 was sold new by Jack
Daniels Porsche in New Jersey to Robert Haack of Thousand Oaks,
California.
The Porsche spent the entirety of its life in the forgiving weather
of Southern California, and was eventually stored, essentially
unused, with a dry fuel tank for optimal preservation. Following
its more recent acquisition by the consignor, the Speedster was
treated to thorough mechanical attention by the marque experts at
V&S Motors in Marina Del Rey that included work on the engine
insulation pad, filters, belts, brake hoses, hood and decklid
shocks, and a comprehensive fluid service. New Michelin tires were
mounted on the Fuchs alloy wheels, although the original tires are
included separately.
Currently displaying just 41 original miles, this
preservation-quality Speedster is documented with the original Jack
Daniels dealer invoice and a copy of the Porsche certificate of
origin, which was only recently submitted to obtain a title for the
car. It is accompanied by the original owner's manuals in the
proper folio, including a warranty booklet, dealer directory, and
911 Speedster supplement, as well as the air compressor kit, tool
roll, and spare key. The scarcely used 911 would make a fantastic
addition to even the most fastidious Porsche collection, ideal for
display at club events or open-top driving enjoyment in what is
practically an as-new 1989 Speedster. To view this car and others
