For Sale: 1969 Shelby GT500 in Manassas, Virginia

Vehicle Description

Offered for sale is my 1969 Shelby GT500 Sportroof. This Shelby is equipped with the R code 428 Cobra Jet ram air engine backed by a C6 automatic transmission and a 3.50 ratio traction lok 31 spline nodular rear end. This is a nicely equipped car with power steering and brakes, power ventilation, tilt kick away steering wheel, visibility group, fold down rear seat and factory tachometer. Additional owner added items include rear window slats, front spoiler and an AM/FM 8 track radio with rear quarter panel speakers. The car rides on correct Shelby 15 x 7 wheels with BF Goodrich P235/60R15 radials. The odometer reads 84,707. It is unknown if this is the actual mileage. I bought this Shelby about three years ago from a private seller and do not know anything about the history of the car prior to my ownership. I am at a point in life where priorities have changed and am selling to generate cash for other interests and projects.

According to previous owner documentation the engine was replaced at the dealership at 3,868  miles. I am not able to see a vin stamp on the heads which leads me to believe this was a service replacement engine from the dealer. The date stamp on the block is not very legible due to the rough casting but appears to read 0J19 which would be October 19,1970. This would probably coincide with the stated mileage at the time the engine was replaced. The engine retains its correct cast iron intake with the Holley 4150 carburetor and hot air choke. The exhaust feeds into correct cast iron manifolds with the correct H pipe and transverse muffler. The engine starts easily and runs strong with no smoke or unusual noises.

The transmission appears to be the correct C6 unit for the 1969 Cobra Jet. The tag reads PGB AF1  017088 and it has the correct R stamped servo which was unique to the Cobra Jet. The transmission shifts and operates smoothly with no unusual noises, There is a small bit of seepage around the shift lever on the side of the trans case so it will need a new seal at some point. The tag for the rear end pumpkin is missing but it is the correct nodular unit with the N stamping.

The body is in excellent condition with no evidence of rust or body damage. The car was originally painted Grabber Orange but was changed to Calypso Coral by a previous owner. The paint shows very nicely with a smooth finish and high gloss. There are a few stone chips from normal use which have been touched up. The undercarriage is painted red oxide primer and is highly detailed with recently replaced exhaust, fuel tank, steel lines and cables, etc. The rear end housing and suspensions are also nicely detailed. All exterior lights are in good working order.

The interior is in excellent condition with original comfort weave seats. The carpet, dash pad and door panels appear to have been replaced and are in excellent condition. All interior lights and gauges are in working order except for the clock. It was working until recently. I will include a quartz conversion kit for the clock to be installed by the new owner. The radio is a vintage Motorola AM/FM 8 Track. The radio works fine but the 8 track is inoperative. The trunk contains a high quality speckled mat with space saver spare, jack and proper hardware.

With the car show season upon us now is the time to buy and enjoy for the Summer. Although there are usually several Shelby's for sale on the internet my observation is that most of them are for sale by dealers or are consigned to auctions. This is a chance to buy direct from a private seller and avoid paying the dealer markup or the auction house buyers commission. Included with the car is a deluxe framed Marti report, laminated build sheet and various Shelby invoices and order forms. At this time I am not interested in any trades as I am looking for cash for other interests and projects.

The car is located in Manassas, VA. I have a clear Virginia title in my name. The car is sold as is with no warranty or guarantee. Buyer is responsible for shipping. Payment shall be in the form of wire transfer or bank cashiers check within 10 days after sale.
