Vehicle Description
1988 Ford Mustang GT Convertible
The third generation Mustang is frequently referred to as the
Foxbody Mustang since it used the new Fox platform. Foxbody
Mustangs were produced between 1979 and 1993, the longest
generation of Mustangs to date, though there were several
significant body updates made throughout this generation. Though
the Foxbody Mustangs were popular at their release, they've only
gained popularity in the years since then. The Foxbody has gained a
reputation as a modders dream, and with the right modifications
this Fox can fly.
Here at Classic Auto Mall we await with worms on our breath (uhh
baited breath actually!) to see what will come through the door
next. Well every now and again we get a car that is a jaw
dropper... so now we give you on consignment, and could be yours a
1988 Fox bodied Mustang with a mere 13,586 original miles, and all
buttoned up, well maintained, and simply marvelous to behold. Just
like new, way back from 1988! Read ON!
Exterior
Paint code 9L adorns this car and in layman's language this
translates to Oxford White. The paint is excellent and original and
covers straight steel sculpted panels which make up this iconic
iteration of the Fox bodied Mustang. It does not get any better
than this with excellent minded gaps, perfecto straight rust-free
panels, and clear plastic headlights and taillights, excellent
lower body and rocker flanges, and a pristine black convertible top
with a glass rear window. A roll bar has been optioned on, and all
badging denotes the 5.0-liter mill that sleeps below the
hood...shhhhhhhh, you'll awaken the beast! Black accents with door
handles, window surround trimmings, and a rear luggage rack adds
contrast to the Oxford and shows off the car as it should. Cheese
grater wrap around rear tail lighting is perfectly placed above the
integrated body matching bumper. 15-inch turbine style wheels are
on all 4 corners, and have a nice dull machined looking finish.
Interior
The mid 1980's brought us some wild stuff, but then there were
highlights like the interior of this classic sly Fox with door
panels in red with black control panels, black accent panels and
black door handles and switches. This continues for the seating
with black high back leather buckets, sporting tuck and roll
inserts and smooth racing style wrap around bolsters. These seats
have power lumbar controls so you can get it just right baby bear.
A contrasting red console races past toward the dash and has an arm
rest which doubles as the console storage lid. Some black accent
panels for more toggles for the power top, and the shifter are
inserted into the red as it makes its way to the dash. On the dash
we have a mixture of lower red dash front panels which match up to
the door panel line, and above padded black dash top. Extensive use
of the mid 1980's square and rectangle design is used for the dash,
with all controls and gauges in either of these simple geometric
forms. An aftermarket boost gauge is on the driver's A pillar, to
monitor the cold air intake supercharger. The dash is pristine, as
are the carpets which float all seats in a perfect sea of black
thick pile comfort. Red side panels on the rear frame a rear 2 plus
2 bench which is shoehorned into the back of the car, but is
comfortable once you get there.
Drivetrain
An original 5.0 Liter V8 with EFI, a Powerdyne Supercharger, and
cold air intake unit to feed this mill, and we are ready to take on
some serious stuff. A 4-speed automatic AOD transmission with a
shift kit is now installed on the back, and this pushes power back
to a Ford 8.8-inch 2.73 geared rear axle featuring TracLoc. All in
all just super...charged under this hood.
Undercarriage
Some slight surface rust on the usual suspects, but certainly
unremarkable and mostly straight unadulterated black structurally
sound steel unibody, floorpans and rockers. A like new exhaust
system snakes its way rearward and features H piping and dual
Flowmaster mufflers which are fed by headers now on the
supercharged block. Independent coil springs for the front
suspension, and 4 link with coil springs for the rear, along with
power disc brakes upfront and power drums for the rear are seen
underneath in this clean environment.
Drive-Ability
It's not every day one gets the opportunity to drive a 13,500 mile
car from 1988 so my decoder/test driver/copy editor cohort and I
both took the opportunity and we found a quick starter, smooth
runner, and a test track ace with plenty of power, great handling,
and good brakes which stopped the car in a straight line. It also
was an excellent cruiser and produces a nice melodious sound with
the exhaust. All controls were working perfectly, including the
power top. The buckets grab you in a tasteful way, and everything
is within easy reach while driving.
Minty is a word oft seen on eBay and is certainly apropos here.
With documented low mileage she is all here in her 1988 glory, and
ready to have her key turned and her tires lit up. Lots o love left
in this one, and it's a classic Fox bodied Mustang which are ever
increasing in value right at this moment. Hop in quick before it
goes to someone else.
