For Sale: 1966 Ford Mustang in Rincon, Georgia

Vehicle Description

I am the third owner of this extremely well kept 2 door classic Ford Mustang coupe in candy apple red. Its powered by a 289 C code, believed to be the original, with a 2bbl autolite 2100 mated to a C4, Cruise-O-Matic, automatic transmission (both with data plates). It also has power steering and power brakes. Original owner’s manual. No accidents. Motor has ~24,500 miles since rebuild in 2007 and runs and sounds great. The car specs (engine, trans, color, interior, etc.) match the VIN tag #6F07C214047 and both the door data plate and fender apron match too. Restored as close to original specs as possible over the years except for a few modern efficiency upgrades as described below.

This car was born on January 5, 1966 in Dearborn, Michigan and delivered to the Charlie Hillard Ford Dealership in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas. It was purchased on January 25, 1966 and lived in Texas for 23 years. It was then purchased by the second owner and moved to Charlottesville, Virginia where it spent the next 25 years in a garage.

Here’s a rundown of the car:

Engine – The engine was rebuilt in 2007, so I’ve only cleaned up the exterior of the engine and replaced the motor mounts, spark plugs and wires (Motorcraft), water pump (Bosch), 195° thermostat, radiator and hoses, belts, oil pressure and water temp sending units (Motorcraft), fan w/ thermostatic fan clutch, fan shroud, and electric choke. I currently have the HiPo (289 4v) air filter housing installed for better looks and fuel economy, but it comes with the original air filter housing that is easy to replace for car shows and authenticity.

Transmission – The transmission was rebuilt along with the engine, so I’ve only replaced the neutral safety switch (Motorcraft), modulator, pan, and adjusted the bands. This 3 speed transmission shifts beautifully.

Suspension & Drive Train – The entire suspension system has been replaced with premium MOOG brand components (see pic of order receipt) and new KYB gas shocks. Also installed are a 1 ¼” front sway bar and ¾” adjustable rear sway bar. Complete rebuild of the original 8” rear differential (Timken bearings), MOOG U-Joints, and changed fluid using Mobil One 75w-90. Sand blasted, primed and painted all five original 14x5” wheels and match balanced new P195/70R14 Michelin tires. Super smooth ride and handling.

Brake System – The entire brake system has been replaced including wheel cylinders, brake pads, adjusters and springs (Wagner), brake lines and hoses, and I upgraded the original single bowl master cylinder to a dual bowl master cylinder and power brake booster (SSBC) for safety. Also added an adjustable rear proportioning valve (SSBC). This car also has four FoMoCo drum brake hubs, which I had turned, sand blasted and painted.

Fuel System – The entire fuel system has been replaced with a new 16 gallon tank (still have the original tank), tank sending unit, fuel lines, rebuilt carburetor (I will also include a spare 65 carb), and fuel filter.

Electrical System – Newer battery (Motorcraft) and cable set (Motorcraft), battery shelf, starter and starter solenoid (Motorcraft), 12v voltage regulator (Autolite), rebuilt distributor and replaced the single point breaker system with a Pertronix breakerless electronic ignition system, flame-thrower coil, calibrated instrument cluster gauges (new 5v voltage regulator on rear of cluster), alternator (Motorcraft) and wire loom.

Exterior – Except for the front and rear valance, all sheet metal is original including the floor pans. This car lived in Texas where it’s very dry and in a garage in Virginia, so I’ve only found very minimal surface rust that was easily wiped off with a scotch brite pad. It’s a beautiful thing to have such a well-preserved car and honestly that’s what drew me to this car. It does have new old stock (NOS) Ford bumpers. All the glass was removed and cleaned so new weatherstripping, window felt and rollers could be installed. You may note that the dual trumpet exhaust exits through the rear valance. This came standard on the GT models in 1966, and while this not a GT, it still looks cool and sounds great.

Interior – The rear seat, headliner, and dash are all original and are in excellent shape for being 54 years old. The front seat covers, seat buns, carpet, kick panels, door cards have all been replaced. Three-point seat belts were added for safety, but I still have both of the original lap belts. The original heater box was rebuilt along with a new plenum with ducts. There’s a new concours repro glove box. This car had A/C installed at the dealership and although it is not currently in the car, I do have all of the original parts. The radio has been replaced with a new Retrosound AM/FM radio that is as close to an exact replica as they make. New dual way single front and rear speakers provide a decent stereo sound (original AM radio included).

I am also including a Ford shop manual and Haynes manual that fully explains how to work on every single part on this car.
