Vehicle Description
This elegant DS420 is a fine example of Daimler's exclusive
factory-built limousine. Riding on a stretched version of the
Jaguar 420G platform, the DS420 shared the big Jaguar's independent
suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, and powerful "XK" twin-cam
inline six with dual carburetors. The bodies were built by Motor
Panels Ltd, then finished and opulently trimmed in traditional
wood, leather, and wool by Vanden Plas coachbuilders. The Daimler
DS420 was among the last factory-built limousines available
anywhere, serving as the official transport of the British Royal
Family for many from its introduction in 1968 through the end of
production a remarkable 24 years later in 1992. According to the
Jaguar Daimler Heritage Certificate, this DS420 Limousine was built
on June 29, 1976 and sold new later that year via offical
distributor Reeve & Stedeford of Birmingham, UK. It is understood
that early in its life, the car belonged to Mr. Nick Taylor in the
UK. In the late 1970s he brought it to the United States aboard the
Queen Elizabeth II with the intention of using it on an American
vacation. On board the ocean liner, he met the grandfather of the
car's most recent owners, who purchased it from Taylor in 1980.
Since then, the Daimler remained in the same family until recently.
It is presented in a handsome combination of black with royal
claret body sides and original olive leather trim. The car is
largely unrestored except for some paintwork (the claret paint is a
later addition) and appears well-maintained and with an honest,
usable character. It features factory air conditioning, electric
windows, dual jump seats, and a unique radio console for the rear
compartment. Burl wood trim covers the dash, door caps, and
division panel. Included in the sale is an original handbook,
service charts, factory parts catalogue, and a Jaguar Daimler
